Default Topps Insert and Test Set complete set rankings

Posted By: MikePugeda

This is kind of a spin-off of the '68 Plaks post.

What are the 5-10 toughest Topps INSERT/Mainstream Odd issue sets to complete? (Ex. '65 Topps Transfers, '66 Rub-Offs, '73 Candy Lids, '69 Team Posters, '69 Topps Supers, etc.) Please rank in order from toughest to easiest.

What are the 5-10 toughest Topps TEST sets to complete? (Ex. '68 Plaks, '67 Punch-outs, '67 Stand-ups, '68 3-D's, '73 Pin-Ups & Comics, etc. Toughest to easiest.

Please add any sets to list.

Interested to hear any responses.

Mike

I agree with Larry's virtually impossible list and would add the 71 Rookie Artists Proofs. I also agree with his tough list, but would add 68 3Ds and 74 Puzzles, and maybe the 56 Pins. The 74 Deckles are not too bad, unless you want to complete them in white back.

I do have the 56 Hocus Focus done, but have only 3 of the 55s. I have the 3Ds done and , if Larry is right on the revised checklist I need one 67 Punch Out, and a couple of upgrades and maybe some pose vairiations. I still need 4 of the 67 Stand Ups. I think I have the rest of the "tough" ones listed done

Many of the early issues listed in the first post were pack inserts and so are pretty easy to find with some patience. Other hard ones are the 60 Tattoos and the 68 Action Stickers in full 3 panel format. The 69 Deckles are not tough, but the 3 versions of the 68 Proofs are. 71 greatest Moments are moderately hard. So are the 69 4 in 1 ( tougher than the Supers of that year) The 1972 Candy Lids are pretty tough, and the 55 Double Headers in good shape.

My opinion for toughest test issues: 1970 cloth, 1966 Punchouts, 1961 Dice, 1955 Stamps, 1968 Plaks, 1967 Punchouts. Larry, here is a pic of the thick McCarver. Randy

Al, I agree they are "doable", but I had them listed 6th. Would you list something else 6th?

I think the top 5 are near impossible, but not totally.

Randy

I would go with the 71 Artist Rookie Proofs, which I have never seen but Bob Lemke has in the big Catalog and says may be 1 of 1s

Although not listed that I am aware of, I have seen a few 1971 Topps yellowless cards. IMO enough to call them a variation such as the 82 blackless or blueless.

A few years back I saw a 71 yellowless Munson in rough shape sell for well over $1,000 and prior to that another Munson sold for a crazy price.

These are not faded from the sun but legit cards w/o yellow ink. So far I only have the Garvey.

What are your thoughts?

Kevin

How about 1951 Current All Stars? Or is it considered complete without the big 3?

For selfish reasons I consider the Current All Stars complete at 8, since that is all I have . Two of the big 3 did come up on ebay not long back. One, a PSA 1 I think, went for over $ 20 K. The seller then put up a second one in similar condition ( can not remember but think the two that were up were Konstanty and Stanky), but pulled it and may have sold it off line to the first buyer. He may have sold him the 3d ( Roberts) as well, but not sure. I did not bid on the first, but did have a snipe for over $ 20 on the 2nd before it went poof
