Default Post war Mastro/REA/Heritage pickups?

Posted By: Anthony N.

Lots of action on the pre war side, but did anyone pick up anything post war?
I won the '49 Bowman PCL set, been underbidder on that issue a few times, and it seems like patience paid off.
What did you guys win, or just miss out on? Any observations?

Congratulations Anthony! I looked at that lot several times in admiration. That issue has grown on me, and I really didn't pay much attention to it until about a year ago. I didn't bid, but not because I didn't want to.

"Only" pickup? Great condition for an edge sensitive issue. Nice one, Eric!

Great pickup, indeed. One of the nicest I've seen.
Always wondered who that player is in the background. Never could figure it out even when I had this issue under and looked under a mag. glass.
Anyone ever figure out who it is/was??

No idea who it was, but I'm assuming since Mick is in road grays and Bowman was in Philadelphia it was shot at Shibe Park, so it's probably an Athletic or Yankee player.
Can anyone confirm the venue?

That's Shibe. I just Googled it and quickly saw several images of that three-paneled (vertical) right field fence. Still, the player...doesn't really look like "New York" across his chest. They moved to KC in '55 so that picture must have been taken in '54. Vic Power on 1st base?

If I recall correctly, all the 1955 Bowman pixes were taken at Connie Mack Stadium (Shibe). The Bowman Gum Co.
was based in Philly and Shibe was a perfect location since both Major Leagues played in that field.

Congratulations on the PCL set.....I assume that all 36 cards are Factory cut ?

Ted, all are factory cut but 2, so I"ll have to hunt those down. And a big thanks for your article in VCBC #10, it has proved invaluable.

Ted, do you have a scan of any of the uncut sheets cited in the article?

ANTHONY

I have never seen any uncut sheets (or panels) of these PCL cards. As you know, the age old story is that they were only issued as such.
Well, Mark Macrae and I have searched for them for at least 30 years and there has not even been a hint of them. Nevertheless, we know
they were out there as we have seen many hand-cut cards over the years. Perhaps, all the original sheets were cut up into individual cards.

But, I can vouch for the fact that these PCL cards were issued in packs and that is why many of these PCL cards have surfaced in ExMt to
near Mint condition.

I still need 4 more Factory-cut cards to have all the 36 cards in my PCL set in Ex (or better) condition.

Anthony, if you recall from the VCBC article, PCL's were available in the Summer of '49 in waxpacks. And shown here are two 1949 wrappers.
The one on the right is the regular 5-cent one. But, the one on the left remains a mystery. I have a feeling that the packaged PCL cards dis-
tributed on the West coast could have been associated with this wrapper ?

Really folks.....I hope there is some one out there that can identify this mysterious 1949 Bowman wrapper ? ?
