Default 1952 Topps Mantle on ebay

Is it just me or does something seem a little off with this card/listing? The pictures are pretty terrible, but the card looks much nicer than a PSA 2.5. I emailed the seller about the card yesterday and asked him what accounted for the grade and if he could add some high-resolution scans but so far have not heard anything back. Something just seems strange IMO. Thoughts?

It just looks really clean for a 2.5, but its admittedly hard to tell from the pics he's posted...which is also perplexing. Not sure why the guy won't write back as he invites questions in the listing but, oh well, I don't have $12K to drop anyways.

The same seller has a 55 Clemente with a case that has some serious frosting on it.

Is the Mantle in one of the new cases? Says fresh grade.

Can't tell...need binoculars. Maybe someone else can try to contact him with a question? Still no response to mine.

i was watching this card as well and was trying not to do anything to "advertise" her. but since it's been done.

it's a super nice 2.5
i, too, wish there was a better picture or a scan so i could scan the bar code.
i have not tried to message seller (usually wait til the day of)
the lack of any recent buying feedback has me concerned.
the lack of any selling feedback has me even more concerned.

gonna be bidding, but will definitely be putting it on my amex just in case for an added layer of security.

It is amazing what people will sell with less than desirable pictures and descriptions, even high dollar items. Who doesn't have a scanner these days or the ability to take a close up photo with camera phone if you must go that route.

exactly, but sometimes it works in your favor price wise as it makes people a tad skeptical, like this.

so with all that being said. this card SCREAMS FAKE, nothing to see here. move along. move along!

disclaimer: joking on screaming fake. worth the gamble though.

Sorry, didn't mean to out the auction but I just have concerns and if it saves someone on the board some drama I felt it was worth it.

I really don't understand how its bad taste to bring up any auction that's on the internet especially ebay....we all sell cards and buy cards....don't you want as many people as possible to know about a card for sale if you are selling a card.? Plus if you are the one that's bidding on a card you can choose not to 'out' an auction.. I just don't see people who aren't bidding on cards to 'out' every auction they aren't bidding on, I don't think it happens........just don't see how its a problem

Plus unfair that some are outed and some aren't....might as well let every card be 'outed' if there was any problems to begin with to ensure when you buy and sell a card you have equal chance to get close to what you paid for....

Nice card indeed, the only thing i can see, maybe something above Micks knuckles, appears to be a white line/scratch, other than that, i am clueless as to 2.5 grade.

At that starting price, I dont think anything was lost by outing the auction.

Something about the back turns me off

Default New Secure Holder

The slab is the new tamper proof design (not tamper evident). Unless someone has a WIWAG load of these slabs, the card should be good.

Still no response to my very respectful and innocuous questions about the card and request for a high-resolution scan. I wouldn't bid on it even if I did have the money.

Can't tell about the case, but the Clemente looks to have some corner wear(for me, too much to be a 7).

Here is what the Mantle's Barcode should look like.... the barcode in the image that is provided for the ebay listing looks close to this one.

He got back to me as well.

"It IS a very nice Mantle. Wrinkle maybe at the top. Nothing that stands out with regard to crease or staining/et. Back is clean. I have not idea why so low..We all thought 3.5 or maybe a even a 4. Psa man...who knows! If I'd known it would have come back at 2.5 for 600. bucks I'd sent it to SGC. I'll try and post a better pic tomorrow. I only have a laptop. My son has the new phone so Ill have him try and get better photo to post. I have had tons of questions and offers on both cards so I am trying to catch up to everyone."

all this talk...sounds like an episode of catfish when the girl cant seem to get her camera to work on the computer and is the only 18 year old that doesn't seem to be computer literate...

just pay 30k for the psa 5 on Mile high..i know you got a bid there anyway ..its in extended bidding so not 'outing' that card..

Here's a little help. The 2nd link is great for checking out scans of your cards to see if the barcode will at least output the correct SN...

cw,

thanks and will look into these! i've used redlaser on my iPhone for a while, but you have to have a decent pic posted for it to work.

52boynton,

looks like you are taking extreme offense to the "outing" post. reread through the entire thread. you'll see i took your side, so unwad the proverbial panties please and let's move on.

ok, cool. just unwadded mine!

no, i did not bid. i actually just sold one of my 5's and not in the market right now considering the prices they are fetching. if i can grab a decent 1,2 or 3 that's centered and looks like that for under my "magic" number, i will snag her. i bought all 3 of my 5's for under $18k.

edited: and can't tell by that pic, but i mighta even traded straight up for 1 of my 5's for that 2.5.

Default Back problems

Something you all might be missing. Take a closer look at the back, far right side. There seems to be a tape, glue, wax or sunlight stain that is about 1/8 of an inch that runs the length of the right side of the back from top to bottom. At first I thought it was a shadow, but after looking at close up there a few small white dots, which would not be there if it a shadow. Please correct me if needs be as I have been pulling doubles shifts for a few days and am not entirely coherent. Finally heading to bed after 48 hours of no sleep.

Default No back problems

Well I see in the new pictures uploaded that the apparent line of darkening along the right backside I thought I was seeing is not there. Must have been a shadow after all.

Based on the $8000 spent on the 52 Mantle that was faded and worn beyond recognition, I think the asking price of $12,000 is fair.

Although I have a hard time believing that the severely faded card actually sold for $5000, then $8000 a week later, and then even more...just something fishy about the sales history.

But the card referenced in the OP looks pretty amazing for the 2.5 grade. I am surprised that someone has not negotiated a price by now, and the card has not been pulled by the seller.

right I don't understand how a 1500 spread around in charges couldn't of been negotiated unless the seller thinks the bidding will go higher than the min bid eventually during one of the weeks he posts it.
