"The Merkle Boner"

On Wednesday, September 23, 1908, while playing for the New York Giants in a game against the Chicago Cubs, while he was 19 years old (the youngest player in the NL), Merkle committed a base running error that later became known as "Merkle's Boner," and earned Merkle the nickname of "Bonehead."

In the bottom of the 9th inning, Merkle came to bat with two outs, and the score tied 1-1. At the time, Moose McCormick was on first base. Merkle singled and McCormick advanced to third base. Al Bridwell, the next batter, followed with a single of his own. McCormick advanced to home plate scoring the winning run for the game. The fans in attendance, under the impression that the game was over, ran onto the field to celebrate.

Meanwhile, Merkle, thinking the game was over, walked to the Giants' clubhouse without touching second base. Cubs second baseman Johnny Evers noticed this, and after retrieving a ball and touching second base he appealed to umpire Hank O'Day, who would later manage the Cubs, to call Merkle out. Since Merkle had not touched the base, the umpire called him out on a force play, and McCormick's run did not count.

The run was therefore nullified, the Giants' victory erased, and the score of the game remained tied. Unfortunately, the thousands of fans on the field (as well as the growing darkness in the days before large electric light rigs made night games possible) prevented resumption of the game and the game was declared a tie. The Giants and the Cubs would end the season tied for first place and would have a rematch at the Polo Grounds, on October 8. The Cubs won this makeup game, 4-2, and thus the National League pennant.

Chicago Giants
In 1910, the Leland Giants separated into a team run by owner/ex-manager Frank Leland and manager Rube Foster. Foster won the rights to the Leland Giants name. Leland's new club was called the Chicago Giants. The first year of their existence they went 6-7, while the Leland Giants were 11-0. The Giants did introduce southern blackball star Smokey Joe Williams to the north, but he was just 3-4 with a 3.12 RA that year. The next year Foster's team was renamed the Chicago American Giants and did not fare as well as Leland's club, which went 3-2. Home Run Johnson joined the team at shortstop that year. The Giants fell to 4-11 against top black opponents in 1912 as Johnson and Williams both went to east-coast teams. The Chicago Giants were an also-ran the rest of the decade while the Chicago American Giants were one of the top Negro League teams. In 1920 Foster formed the Negro National League and both Chicago clubs joined. The American Giants won the title while the Chicago Giants were just 2-12 to finish last. A bright spot of the time was the introduction of John Beckwith, who would become one of the greatest hitters in Negro League history. The Giants finished in 1921 with a last-place 7-37 record, though Beckwith batted .355, sixth in the league. The team dropped out of the NNL after that year and faded away over time.

One of my all time personal favorites. Got it from a board member on the b/s/t. Stamped March 3, 1925 on back.

I really like that Monarch Typewriter postcard of Collins as well. Here are a few of my favorites from the famed Stewart collection, on permanent display in my home:

The Ruth/Hornsby card is a 1927 Imperial Chocolate postcard from Cuba. The Stengel is from the 1944 Grand Studios set of Milwaukee Brewers.
