I love D304 cards and this is a great one. Prices are going up a little but regardless I thought it interesting that this seller (maybe a board member or lurker) has the description of, to paraphrase:

"this is the best picture of wagner ever"

Actually this looks like a little cartoon stick guy with a very colorful background and the words "Honus Wagner" at the bottom. To me it bears no resemblance whatsoever......just some thoughts on an idle night...

I have this discussion with a friend about many cards I own. I am drawn to the overall aesthetics of a card even if the card bears no resemblance to the player. This player in this card could be anyone but Wagner. The name plate is good enough for me.

I think it looks like Harry Steinfeldt who must be better than Wagner if he was the best infielder the Cubs had during their WS years and the other 3 guys are all hall of famers

this is why we collectors are so different. This card does nothing for me at all.

Looks like a enlarged cutout of a Bazooka comic.

Anyone have one of these of Cobb? Any grade. I love the issue and need a cartoon Cobb. Guess I just have not seen enough of them. Ya got to admit they are nicer looking than the E91's. Aren't they?????

the difference in collecting I guess. SUre I can appreciate the rarity, but I like the e91 colors much better and the overall look.

The Cobb on the other hand is a whole different breed of this issue.

I do not have anymore e91's to compare these.

To me the card needs to resemble the player. Cards that in my mind don't include the T206 Johnson hands at chest, the E90-1 Jackson, the 15CJ Mathewson, and the 52T Mantle. I am sure there are many others.

John:

I have to disagree with you. It looks nothing like either Honus Wagner or Harry Steinfeldt. I think it looks like Casey Stengel.

I think Wagner's best images are on post card issues - PC796, Pinkerton and Max Stein.

Since I never intend to own a T206 Wagner, the next best card
of him has to be his E90-2 card. Its essentially the same picture
but I think it is aesthetically more appealing than the T206.

Kevin:

Its the pose on the Wagner card that reminds me of Steinfeldt's t206 batting card and the actual picture the t206 was taken from, but since the cartoon drawing is so non-descript it could look like 100s of players back then

Don't forget the Wagner W600 Uniform. Pretty close if not exactly like the T206.

My vote would be for the very rare J=K Candy Type II Wagner.

I've seen a scan of one owned by a fellow board member (I'll let them reveal themselves and post the scan if they so choose) and that card just jumps out at you.

To me, those black and white portraits and poses are boring.
I like the d304 issue cuz' its design is unique.
I already know what wagner looks like. I'm not interested in having a picture of him. I enjoy the lithographs! W600 and e107 are amazing though.

However, the e91s never did it for me.

The "Type II" J=K cards are the ones that are colorized and a portion of the top of the card served as the tab of the candy box. Not the black and white portraits that you are referring to.

If you see a scan of the card, you'll realize that Zach and I aren't totally off base with our opinion.

I won't post a scan of the card because I don't own it and respect the owners right not to post it unless they want to.

Scott

Scott,
My post just happened to be below yours and zach's. But, I was just making a comment towards the entire jist of the thread rather than the specific issue that you are referring to.

Take care.

I notice that the PSA 2 D304 Wagner referred to in the original post went to $3025 but did not reach the reserve. I wonder what mine might bring at auction. I'm glad I bought it in 1997, when prices were more reasonable.

Am not purporting that this is the "best Wagner pose ever" because it ain't. (Of the cards posted on this thread I am partial to the cabinet posted by Bruce. That is a True Beauty. Pardon my ignorance but which set is that from?) My card is a genuine, authentic Mike Wheat Fantasy T3. I know that he took a bit of flack a while ago for making the T3 reprints; that has already been hashed out. Just thought I'd share this card (which the way things are looking is going to be the only Wagner I'm going to have). Anybody can tell me where this image is from? Another BB card perhaps? BTW I also have an image of the MW Fantasy T3 Joe Jackson which I will post if anybody requests it.

I had intended to identify the Wagner cabinet a few posts earlier as a 1911 "Sporting Life" cabinet (M110). They are 5 5/8 x 7 1/2 with an ad for "Sporting Life" on the reverse. There were only 6 subjects - Chance, Chase, Cobb, Lajoie, Matty & Wagner. (SCD 2005, page 340).

Some very nice stuff. Keep it coming.

I like the E91s, simply for the colors and design. Yeah, everyone seems to have a twin or three, but they're still cool.

My favorite Wagner is still the E92 (and the like) throwing pose.

After more thought I think there are too many great Wagner poses to pick just one...this is the very first card from the Trucker Boy find.....No one bid on it on ebay....and it was in the correct category but the seller had about a 1 feedback with 1-2 negatives....fuzzy scan....and couldn't spell too well....It didn't open at $1500 and I got it for about a grand...(it wasn't graded at the time )
