Topps 3D

One of my favorite sets is my Topps 68 3D set. it was a test set with very limited distribution and, I assume due to production costs, not a product Topps repeated again until 2011 with their Lineage product, and again in a small way in terms of # of cards. But I really liked that issue as well

In the 80s Topps did put out 2 "3D sets", but they were just clunky plastics.

I love the new Topps 3D cards too...they look very close to the original 68's... I have two originals and was definitely thinking of adding one or two of the new ones to my type collection....

I don't think PSA grades the 80s 3Ds . They are big and thick . They do grade some of the 2011 Lineage cards which are regular size. But it did not see them in the PSA company set list

those '68's are beautiful! I owned one the Brooks Robinson proof versions from 1986-1993...wish I still had that one

Mike-- I am envious. How did you originally get it and where did it go. Have you ever had any of the unissued proofs ( Monday/Odanohue/Davis)I think the Robinson is viewed as a Prototype

yes, I would agree with this being a prototype. I got it at the '86 National from Brian Morris. He had that and an oversized Unitas 3-D prototype as well, I believe. I was lucky enough to set up at a lot of midwest shows so many of the dealers knew I collected Brooks Robinson. Brian was taking offers at the show and gave me "last offer", so on Sunday I went to see him and he said his highest offer was $525, and sold that to me for that.

Unfortunatly, in 1993 or so I sold off much of my collection including my Brooks Robinson collection, which had very few holes. I put the card in an Al Rosen auction for $2000 and it got zero bids! A bit later I was contacted by a collector who I think was a lawyer from Philly about the card. I think he said he was "hoarding" the 68 3D's as well as some more recent test issues including the '89 Topps Heads-Ups & Yankees/Mets Doubleheaders. We agreed on a price of $2800 and he got it from me at the '93 National in Chicago.

One other rare card I should have owned was the Brooks Robinson '61 Dice Game. A still well-known auction/dealer offered me that in 1983 for $325 and agreed to give me 2 days to get the money together (I was 16) since I bought several other items from him. I called him the next morning and he had sold it. I never saw another until the recent one in a Huggins-Scott auction.

I never had any other of the proofs you mentioned, as I got the Brooksie because of him, not the issue. The only Topps proofs I've owned was the 81 Dodgers Rookies with the pics in the wrong places, the Dave Kingman Coke (Proof or Sample for Coke?), and a 1977 Manny Trillo with Cubs in purple (the rest of the panel of 8 was "proofs" without the signatures). The 1st 2 I got in trade from Craig Williamson for some 1981-83 Fleer proof sheets. I was lucky enough to have a "find" of 100+ Fleer proof sheets that were loaded with unissued "variations" as well as some unissued players. In the 80's I was fascinated with proofs and my learning paid off!

I have a set of the 89 Heads Up and the Yankee Mets DHs ( and the related proofs), but doubt I will ever latch onto one of the Brooks Prototypes .

I have only one of the 61 Dice cards, Kaline. Bob ( bobsbbcards) and Larry (sflayank), who post here, have several. How much did the one in H&S go
for ?

I think the H&S Dice Game went for $18k. A friend who bought a lot of my Brooksie stuff alert me to it as I've told my "sob" story about the other being sold before my chance too many times...

H&S had the 3-D recently too...think that went for $28k..maybe the one you saw (more $ w/buyers premium?). That one was a blank back I think. Mine had the xograph stamp on the reverse, and a pretty good crack, but was the pride of my collection for many years.

Those two sets you have are toughies! I remember ordering an unopened pack of Heads Up back in '89 with a friend for about $60...think we got Joyner?

Hi Mike:

Are you still collecting Brooks Robinson cards? The reason I ask is I just started a thread in the Modern Baseball Cards Forum (1980-Present) titled 1997 Topps Rookie Reprint Autographs. Brooksie's card is included in a variation you most likely do not have.

I just picked up an uncut sheet of them with the Certified Autographs Gold Foil stamps WITHOUT the autographs.

I am waiting for Topps Experts Al Richter and Dav.e Hornis.h to comment on if they have been seen without the autographs WITH the foil stamp.

Also it is my belief that this sheet has the only cards of Ashburn with the gold foil stamp as his cards were NOT issued autographed because he died before he could sign the cards.

Topps also experimented with other sports
in their 3D adventures. I have seen a few
of the football go for big money. I saw a large
one of Bart Starr many years ago and I was finally
able to obtain it.
