Default 1933 O Pee Chee Baseball???

Posted By: ds1961ds

Anybody ever seen any of these cards?

They were found with an original salesmen envelope.

The cards/photo's are described as a sepia tone 6 1/2in by 8 1/2 in.

The envelope came with 48 of the 50 cards.

I will try to find the article and post a scan of it on the board.

It sounds like you might be referring to the 1933 Canadian Butterfingers. This is my Grove Canadian Butterfinger. Is this what yours look like?

The article clearly shows the salesman enevelope with the O Pee Chee name on it. I cannot remember exactly what the cards look like. I read this article some time back. I've misplaced the magazine, once I find it I will post a scan of the article.

The article has a picture of both the salesman enevelope and one card/photo.

From the 2007 SCD that I have it looks like there were 58 of the Canadian Butterfingers, so these may not be what you are referring to.

Most places I have looked at have the first baseball set from O-Pee-Chee as the 1937 V300 set. A pretty complete listing of old O-Pee-Chee sets can be found at:

http://pages.infinit.net/apratt/1937.htm

The only 1933 set I know of with 50 cards in it is the "1933 R308 Orbit Gum Company Tattoos". The "1933 E137-19 Zeenuts" had 48. Which are the only ones that are close in set length.

They were obviously a premium as the size is way too big for a gum package.

My guess is like Brads, 1933 V94's. they are the same exact size and from what the SCD says the sets (3 different types) were available as a premium with Butterfinger and OTHER candy products. The main reason the premiums (US ones) are tied to Butterfinger is some are found that have the Butterfinger ad printed on them (but these are also different as the stock is much thicker).

I have seen evidence in the past that the "Canadian Butterfingers" were actually a product of O-Pee-Chee (which is how I have mine listed on my website), but I can't remember exactly what it was, but I think it may have been an envelope as described by the initial poster. The only thing linking these "cards" to the American Butterfingers is that they share a large percentage of their checklists and photos. The Canadians are much smaller and much tougher, and regardless of what the guide books may say, they are more desirable. Several players (like the Fresco Thompson shown below) are found only in the Canadian set.

DS - try changing your browser if you're using Mozilla or Opera.
I was pulling my hair out trying to post a scan for awhile and
then opened an IE browser and tried it and had no problem.
