I love this set and have all 48 cards in PSA 8. And there is noone from this set I like better than the Babe. |

Thorpe helped me win a bet when I took the Over in the number of baseball players that would be listed in the ESPN top 20 athletes of the century back in 2000. Technically he counts as a baseball player too |

Man, I do love that Hubbell. He's got such an intense look on his face. I love the light blue background, too. |

My favorite card in the set, and one of my favorite cards of all time. The Duke was an olympic gold medalist, but more importantly is the father of Surfing, having introduced the sport to California (and hence, the mainland) and Australia. The most prestigeous contest was named after him, and he's still the Babe Ruth of Surfing. |

Duke was a cult figure, and there are two restaurants called Duke's, one in Hawaii and one in Santa Barbara. I've eaten in the latter one several times. |

The Duke's Pan Handle Scrap card goes for some serious money as it's quite rare and is contemporary to when he was actively surfing. |

Duke Kahanamoku is definitely the leading god in the Hawaiian pantheon. Duke memorabilia always commands a premium. A copy of this postcard cost me around two hundred bucks. Lot of the locals were pissed off that his statue has its back turned to the ocean, something no smart waterman would do. Still a great statue and a major tourist attraction at Waikiki. Duke's Canoe Club is one of the few good reasons for locals to visit Waikiki (otherwise it's like Rodeo Drive with surf, not to mention the place is lousy with mimes). Food is no screaming hell but you can count on hearing terrific old style Hawaiian music there and the waitresses are superior grade eye candy (at least according to us lowlifes who objectify women). |

1st one is of the Duke (at 1 min 13 sec. he grabs his board), second is more fun with a vintage surfing dog! |
