Were the A&G Champions albums ever reproduced?

I've never heard of a reproduction, unless it is something done very recently.

I always look for the albums Dan and have never seen a reproduction of any issue. I suspect they'd be fairly easy to spot because of the stone lithographic printing. Very hard to duplicate using today's techniques.

What are the odds that this is a real page from the album?

If they photocopied it, they could have picked a better page.

Do you have it in your possession Dan? A 15X magnifying glass is all you need to authenticate it. Like David has preached...look for that orderly dot pattern.

If orderly you see, leave it be!

I am assuming that you are wondering about buying this page online from an unknown seller and don't have it in person to examine. If so you can ask the seller the size of his page and see if it measures up with the original size. If it's some computer reprint, it probably isn't the original size. Someone else will have to quote the size, or perhaps it's listed in the Standard Catalog. Also, the original album pages are printed on a thin cardboard, not paper.

I've not seen a reprint of the complete albums either.

Dan. David is correct that they were 6"x8" on heavy stock. Also a removed album page would have 2(3?) holes on the left side where the album was strung together. If this page is real it looks like it may have been trimmed to fit in the frame.

I already bought it, but I haven't gotten it yet. I only paid $45 shipped for it so even if it's not real it will still look nice on the wall. If the albums were only 6"x8" then I can tell you right now that it's probably not real as I think the frame is much larger than that. I'll know in a couple of days as it's already shipped out to me. I took the chance on this BIN on ebay because I bought some baseball equipment from this seller a couple of weeks ago with a BIN and the stuff was fantastic....she doesn't normally sell sports related items and what she does put on ebay (which is a lot) is all put on with a BIN. She told me she picked this up at an estate auction in Corrina, Maine this past weekend.

Dan, you don't have to know the page size to know if the page is the right size. The cards on the original album pages are the same size as the regular N28 cards. If the cards on your page are N28 size, the page is the right size.

It would cost you more than $45 for that frame. If the album page is fake you bought a hundred dollar frame for half price.

That makes me feel better Barry. I'm still hoping that there is a real album page in there, but I'm doubting it. Either way it's still going to look nice on the wall.

Daniel- One day you will pick up a really nice display piece and you'll have a beautiful frame to put it in. Try going into a frame store and see what they charge for something that elaborate. They aren't cheap.

If what you receive has correct size cards, is on cardstock and perhaps has a bit of foxing on the back, it's a safe bet that you have an original page. I beleive the pages are quite a bit larger than an 8x11" sheet of paper, and on almost any cheapo computer reprint offered on eBay, the cards will be the wrong size. I know I'd probably wreck my computer printer if I tried printing on a jumbo sized sheet of cardboard.

David, are you saying that the album pages are larger than 8"x11"? I'm confused. I thought the albums were only 6"x8"?

I don't have the correct size in front of me, but my don't-quote-me quess is that the correct size is 16 x 18 inches. I have sizes listed on my site, by my A & G size is an obvious and soon to be fixed typo-- "6x18." I've owned some of the pages and, out of memory, they were much larger than a 8x11" sheet of paper. There are non-sport albums that are small.

I just looked in Lemke's book and it says the albums are 6"x8"....it also says the pages are dual sided so I guess if this thing isn't blank backed then it might be real. You know what's odd is that when I did a google search I came up with some sites saying this album was very large and some that say the 6"x8" size....someone here has to own one of these.

Ok. I've never owned one of these album pages, so I really don't know for sure. I'll shut up and defer to David as he would know better. I was basing 6"x8" on this link..

https://www.gfg.com/baseball/ginter.shtml

16" x 18" though seems odd, as that would look almost square, not the right proportions. Something like 14" x 18" would be more proportional...no??

6 X 8" is the correct size. I thought they were blank backed (I thought this is where all the blank backed N28s came from that were on cardboard), but I can check when I get home.

The plot thickens...Lemke's book says the pages are "double sided". Maybe it's just the covers that are blank backed?

As reference for sizing, I used my web page that has the typo '6x18.' I figured the size had to be either 6x8" or 16x18." If the other sources say 6x8," it appears my sizing guess was bad.

6x8 range. I've seen TONS of them, have about 10-12 of the non-sports albums and they're the same size (actually, one of two sizes but both close to the 6x8 size). I'm not sure about the A&G Champions albums if they're blank backed. I'm sure Keith O will chime in when he checks his out. They really are nice collectibles...........

The only album I owned was the Indian Chief one. The front and back covers were printed on the both sides while the pages with the "cards" were blank backed.

I have one of these, which I bought from Terry Knouse some years ago as a single page. It is blank backed and 6 x 8, on heavy paper stock, with three holes from the original string binding. Mine is matted and framed so the scan has some glare.

Here is the cut Glasscock card, cut from the A21 Album (upper left of your framed piece).

Is the Glasscock printed twice in the Album, on 2 pages (maybe cover)? Mine doesnt seem to have the design overlaping the bottom right corner like the framed one above.

Hmmm...Glasscock isn't on the cover. I believe John Ward and John Sullivan are on the cover. Maybe your card was cut from an advertising piece?

edited spelling.

I'd be fairly comfortable that your page is original as I haven't seen many reproductions on these - as noted elsewhere it will be fairly easy to check as the lithographic image is readily apparent on the sheets. Any page with a baseball player is desirable.

The only concern I would have is that the image is cropped by the frame and after all these years you may have some toning that would be unattractive. Still, if the page is fairly nice you got a good deal.
