Auto opinion for this Mays and Aaron(2) please

Just wanted fellow members opinions. Part of a huge collection purchased years ago from a gentleman who collected autographs thru the mail in from the early 60's to mid 70's. Out of a 70 card submission for authentication, 5 autos failed....these three and both ted williams, everything else passed. I thought the Mays was good(just a playing days signature) and wasnt sure about the Aarons. Found it weird that the Aaron signatures from the same era seemed different on the Topps Giants card and the exhibit(removed from a scrap album from the collection).

Was it like these guys to have wife/helper sign for them thru the mail, anyone know the answer. All the other 64 Topps giants autos passed(roughly 15 of them).

Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciative

For what it is worth, good or not the two Aarons do not appear to have been signed by the same person to me. The Mays sure looks ok.

'64 Topps Aaron = Definitely Good
'Aaron Exhibit = Bad

I would re-submit the 1964 Aaron (or send it to another authenticator)

The Mays was signed by his wife. Aaron's family and personal secretary/secretaries have signed his fan mail for decades, as is the case for both the versions you have depicted.

Well, in all fairness to 'ol Red, I don't believe his wife started signing for him until after he got sick. I read somewhere that there are a lot of people that started collecting in and after the 80's that are unaware that they have Mrs. Red Faber's signature.

I have yet to be able to pinpoint the exact year that Mrs. Faber started "assisting" Red with the requests, but it would have been sometime in the mid-late 1960's (the last decade of his life). Surprisingly little through-the-mail material seems to exist which dates from Faber's immediate post-career all the way into the late 1950's. Most Faber material that I've encountered dates from either his playing days or the era when Mrs. Faber signed the majority of the time. An authentic Faber gold HOF plaque PC is tougher than the much-storied Dave Bancroft. Bancroft plaques shouldn't fetch the prices they do, whereas a genuine Faber should sell for far more. I've only encountered 7-10 authentic Faber plaques versus 2.5-3 times as many Bancrofts. More of each continue to turn up, but Bancroft always outweighs Faber. Over the past five years I have seen perhaps 10-12 new Bancrofts. Compare that to perhaps four Fabers. Let's hope that the hobby comes around to seeing these items for the investment pieces they truly are.

Jodi, I've always thought that just about anything signed by Faber, post mid 60's, was probably signed by his wife due to his two heart attacks around that time. It's getting harder and harder to find really good quality Faber signatures on any type material, especially plaques...this might be because he was inducted in 1964 which wouldn't have left him much time to sign the number of requests that would have come in from HOF collectors.

You're correct. I would surmise that over 99% of material dating from that era was signed by the Mrs.

thought you would find this interesting. Seems I stumbled onto an old REA auction with a very similar Mays auto on a 64 Topps Giants card. Even signed in nearly the same spot. Thoughts? Guess a few have slipped by over the years.

I noticed the same break in the "a" and "y" in Mays and the squirlly u shaped "dot" above the "ie" in Willie on the auction Mays and mine.

I apologize for being OT, but can a signed '64 Topps "giants" set actually be completed? I've heard different opinions on the existence of the clemente.

Actually, the Mays featured in the REA lot is correctly noted as being clubhouse (ch). While technically not a clubhouse version (it's a through-the-mail secretarial), that's a good enough description for their purposes.

I didnt even see that clubhouse notation, as always, I appreciate your posts. Never doubted your expertise, just wondering if another Mays "signed thru the mail" auto got by some of the paid experts.

Yes, the set is possible. Here is my Farrell. I have the set minus the Clemente which is possible but never seen, but now must search for a legit Mays and Aaron to get back to 59 out of 60...

I have to agree that it is possible that there are some Clemente signed 64 Topps Giants out there. The cards were around when I was growing up in the 60's and I remember there was a large warehouse find sometime between 70-72 (can't remember exactly) and they started selling them at baseball stadiums in a generic package. I really love those cards...probably too much otherwise I would have had several players, including Mantle, sign some for me. Anyway, I found this discription from REA that was selling 59 of the 60 signed (not Clemente).
Though Clemente is missing, this card is possible to find autographed. The key rarity in signed form for this set is actually #22 Dick Farrell, who is included. Farrell is nearly impossible to find signed in 1964 Topps Giants. After his Major League career ended in 1969 he moved to England, and was virtually inaccessible to collectors seeking his autograph from this time until he died in England in 1977

Farrell is tough, but I have seen 8-10 authentic examples. I've seen scans of two "likely authentic" 64 Giants signed by Clemente, but never actually held one in my hand.

I was going to say in the last 3 years or so I've seen 4 legit Farrells(all offered through highly reputable dealers) but I've never seen one legit clemente.

Dosn't mean it dont exist, but I believe it is far and away the no.1 key to the set.

I do agree that it's a cool set and I was working on it a couple years ago,but kinda cooled on it when I realized that I wouldnt be able to complete the set

Seriously tho, I hope you find one, that would be an amazing set to have full signed. Great looking cards that look even better autographed.
