What's hot in the old school shop ?

So I started to add some more Vintage football cards to my collection . What is your guys opions on players , sets , random ideas to focus on . I like rookies and New York so that's where I started but I want some more flavor in the pot .

FWIW, 57 Topps is my favorite looking football set of all time. Plus it has RCs of Unitas and Starr. That might be a great project.

I think it depends upon your tastes and budget. Football cards go all the way back to the 1800s so you've got plenty of options.

I personally love these mainstream sets across the decades but you can't go wrong with any football set!

1894 Mayo - the first football card set so how can you go wrong? Only card of Frank Hinkey 4x AA

1926 Spalding - tough set but pre-rookies of lots of stars (Grange, Nevers, Friedman)

1935 National Chicle - iconic set with loads of stars and a great look. Bronko, Rockne, Hinkle, Clark head the list of stars.

1948 Leaf - if you like variations, this set is for you but watch for trimmed cards. 2nd half of the set are all SPs which makes it a challenge.

1948 Bowman - often takes a back seat to the Leaf set but I love the crisp, clean B&W images on these ... particularly when well centered

1952 Bowman Large - this set is pure artwork and the larger size makes them even more impressive

1957 Topps - agree this is a great looking set with many stars and rookies.

1963 Fleer - my favorite Fleer set as I love the red borders. Lots of stars too!

1965 Topps - tall boys always look cool to me and the Namath card is iconic

1968 Topps - great clean look to these cards.

1971 Topps - love the red and blue borders and the multi-colored All-Pro cards with Bradshaw and Greene rookies

1972 Topps - very nice, clean set with Staubach rookie

Thanks guys I'm gonna start looking in to some of these . Not sure which one would be the most fun . I'm not really a set collector I'm more of a key card type of guy .

What about doing HOF rookies? Or if you want more of a challenge, signed HOF rookies.

You could always work on the key/rookie cards and then go back and try and complete the sets later with bulk lots of commons. The key cards are generally the ones that would appreciate the most/quickest anyway.

Jeffrey Payne has given you a good idea of the sets that you should probably look at first (depending on your collecting tastes).
