Default Bat "lathe" expert help needed

Posted By: Mike

How many lathe bats were used each year for the pre war players? Or did it vary ? I am new to this lathe bat world. Interesting though. As soon as I find an expert out there, I have other wuestions as well. Thanks

I am not an expert but I would like to clarify what people mean when they speak about a "lathe" bat. Presumably this wouldn't mean any bat produced on a lathe. Do you mean a bat that is used by a bat company as a model for making usable copies? A hasty look at Vince Malta's new book on L&S indicates that many players order 1, 2, or 3 different models in a given year. In 33, Lloyd Waner seems to have ordered bats based on 6 different models, thus using 6 different lathe bats. Do you have any particular player in mind?

Thanks for the response. I was the winner of the Jimmie Foxx lathe bat in the Heritage Auction. I normally don't get involved with bats too much, since I know so little about them. But I am an avid Foxx collector, so I had to get it. I had no choice. To me at least, I feel I got it for a decent price. Any info on this bat would be appreciated. I suppose I could just call John Taube and ask him, but I thought I'd try here first.

Edited to ad: This is the template used to produce bats. Not a Foxx bat with template marks. Just wanted to clarify.

Since I have the Malta book before me, if you could send along length, weight, model number, brand, I might be able to tell you which year or years it was used.
