I need to post photos of my grandmother's Mantle signed photo and signed ball she is going to leave me to make sure its authentic. I think she bought it at a card show back in the mid 80's.

Looks like a familiar picture to me.
Probably available right now on the net for about $9.99 plus $13 shipping.

Well, it nearly caused a fight w my buddy and I. He has lots of years experience, etc. I said I was trying to help, not stir stuff up. I ended up just telling him some experts didn't like it, but nobody is always right. That I guess satisfied him. Wish It was real tho, sure doesn't appear so.

yeah, but he deals mainly in newer cards, and wrestling stuff, BUT has a nice selection of older cards/memorabilia and has had some nice autos, incl Stengel and Other Mantle's Jordan, Montana, etc. Those were JSA or UDA or PSA tho, or definitely legit items.

He just missed tho, and said he knew GAI was a well respected authenticator. Of course, that was the "old GAI" right?

maybe, the old, old gai, when they first started out, then the regular gai has a horrible track record, then they went bankrupt, now its global authentic who acquired their assets and reorganized under their own brand, but continue to maintain the old gai database.

And there are about 10,000+ forgeries that look exactly like that one out there in the market right now.
And you can still buy one today for a very, very cheap price + $double digit shipping per photo.

Scott, what about directing him to a few of the many links about those GAI forgeries (The Mike Baker Collection) or those certed by Morales and Ted Taylor.

This is amusing at best. Love this seller's Ebay ID: "Guaranteed_authentic_sports_autographs."

And then he sells crap like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MICKEY-MANTL...item4cf9b561c2

The "Buy It Now" price is $49.00. Certed by GAI.

18 bids on that? My God, that is HIDEOUS. Its the same story Chris. People are morons, and don't know a Mantle autograph from a Mickey Mouse autograph. NO excuse to not do research and stuff before committing to a purchase like that.

Of course, the forgers and garbage dealers just keep right on existing too.

How can he call himself guaranteed autographs when his selling list has tabasco sauce, recipe books, lithos, cards and almost all unsigned items?
Only on ebay do things like this happen, $50 Mantle's from tabasco sauce sellers. I don't think they sell tabasco sauce on the site where he bought this crap.

Default Ebay seller "psak69."

Now this is totally ridiculous and it comes from that "other" auction site. Someone took a vintage Yankees team photo and miraculously got Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford to sign it.. And certed by Document Examiner, Drew Max (AAU). What a total piece of garbage.

Can you guys describe/educate for me what is bad? I see it on the ball worse than the photo. I have a ball my dad got in the 80's from a trusted dealer that is not authenticated and I am scared to get it checked out now that dad has passed on and passed it down.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but here are pics. Please be kind even if you think its fake. My father believed it was real and Mick was his hero. It was bought from an honest dealer in NC whom I recently spoke to. He claimed to have gotten it signed at a card show himself.,

If you want to educate yourself with certain autographs then I recommend that you study them. It takes time to learn autographs. Below is a good example of a Mantle forgery. The forger attempted to emulate the Mantle signature that you own.

Campy, go on ebay, and study Mantle sigs authenticated by PSA or JSA, for starters. Also, search on here for various Mantle threads. Its just studying and education. I still am not confident in many sigs, but people Like Chris, Richard Simon, David Atkatz and others on here have been an invaluable help.

You can tell him Fudd, the Lowly Mantle collector, has NEVER seen that particular 8x 10 photo (pose) with an authentic signed Mantle. Every damned one I have seen for the past 5 years has been a forgery authenticated by the Big 4 of FAKES, FRAUDS & FORGERIES. GAI, STAT (TTA), Christopher Moral ASS, and Dr Birdsick. That one in question is an unquestionable fake. Tell him to call FUDD. I'll straighten s*** out down there with your friend liver lips.

and that's exactly what I'd do...the ball is good as gold and so is the signature.

These are the kinds of things that are lost to people that the forgers could care less about. They have no conscience. I think that was my motivation in spending countless hours of studying, watching Chris's videos, asking questions on boards, until I could spot a forgery a mile away. The last thing I want for my grandkids are tainted memories of Gramps getting ripped off & passing down worthless forgeries. It is fair to assume the 35 + Mantle pictures and 6 balls are going nowhere in my lifetime.

What about these Mantles? They have been authenticated by PSA but look horrible. Are they actually authentic? Signed in a hurry? Never seen Mantles like these two. The second one is signed Mickl Mant:

The one in blue ink was signed in 1958-early 1959. The one in red ink was signed in the 1960's. Mantle had at least 11 different signature variations during his lifetime. The majority of his signature experimentation occurred during his first decade in the majors.

Ah very interesting. In case a board member owns one of the cards I should clarify that when I said horrible I meant aesthetically.

Alright guys.. sorry about the quality of the photos, took them with my iPhone today. This is the Mantle piece I was talking about that my grandmother bought at a card show in the mid-80's. They came together as a photo plague with ball holder (common in the 80's). What do you think on these?

Thanks in advance guys, hopefully you guys have some good news about these.

Matt

Ugh, how long do forgeries go back?! Thought for sure that back in the mid-80's, it'd probably be safe. Thanks DA
