Default Wagner GAI Sweet Cap Pack

Posted By: ty_cobb

What exactly is the provenance of this pack?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31718&item=1987014969

I thought knowledge of the date stamps would
be more essential in determining the years of
T206 issue, rather than a grading company's
stamp of approval.

The auction title infers that it is possible
to get the prized Wagner, but in the lengthy
text does not talk of the relevant date stamps,
and then says, well anything or nothing could
be in the pack. I assume GAI is authenticating
it as a pack only, how should this compare in value
to a properly dated pack, that really could contain
a T206 card?

The board agreement is that a Sweet Caporal pack can only be dated to a specific year if it has the specific date overprinted on the tax stamp (an uncommon occourance). It was also the agreement that GAI's labels on these packs should not be treated as reliable, because they are not.

The answer is 'undetermined due to lack of information.' I can tell very little from the combination of the GAI label and seller's descrption. It could be 1909 or 1920 for all I can tell. The potential bidder should forget about the GAI label, and ask the seller a bunch of questions (tax stamp, factory, etc) before bidding. If there is an overprinted date (which I doubt), I would be surprised if it could be read through the holder.

I have seen a couple of Piedmont packs with the correct T206 era stamp and overprinted date. As you might expect, each sold for a heafty amount of money. These packs are in a different league than this GAI pack, at least with the current lack of information.

Here is the tax stamp showing from my El Principe De Gales pack. I have examined many different packs and Hankron is correct in that most don't really have the stamp OR more likely the stamp has faded, either completely or to the point of not being able to see a date. Unless there is an overstamp then all of these graded packs by GAI are dated speculatively..which is not a good thing...regards all

Are you trying to say Sweet Caporal packs? I rarely seen unopened Piedmont packs with/without overprinted tax stamp. But have seen a lot of SC packs.

Hi Leon
I think Art regrets selling you that nice El Principe Box. It's a real beauty!
I have asked the seller for the factory designation on the pack, twice with NO RESPONSE. He is either a poor communicator or is unwilling to share an important piece of info.

Roger,
While I can't speak for David, I believe he meant Exactly what he said. Piedmont packs do show up on occasion, probably 1 for every 25 Sweet Cap packs from the same era. Be well brian
