Default Hal Chase

I'm reposting these photos as a separate thread because I love to talk cards and history......

Does anyone know what the history of using the same picture on so many cards?

Also, if anyone has any additional Chases like this that they would like to sell, I think I would to start a sub-set.

Sorry that I can't answer your questions, but that is a great Mello Mints card.

These and other "E92 family" images were used in many different sets, I assume because it was much cheaper for the companies to purchase the existing litho images rather than paying for an artist to create completely new ones. The back runs can be incredibly challenging. Here are all the possible options I'm aware of for the Chase/fielding pose, although some may be only theoretical:

E92 Dockman
E92 Nadja
E92 Croft's Candy (Black)
E92 Croft's Candy (Blue)
E92 Croft's Candy (Red)
E92 Croft's Cocoa
E101
E102
E105 Mello Mint
E106 American Caramel
D303 (General Baking only, not Mother's Bread)
Tango Eggs
T216 Kotton (Style 1)
T216 Kotton (Style 2)
T216 Kotton (Style 3)
T216 Mino
T216 Virginia Extra
D355 Niagara Baking

Also, each of the T216 issues also have two team-name variations on the front (although I'm not sure if both variations are found on each Kotton back style).

So...good luck! I love this "family" of cards.

In addition to Dan's list, the card also is relatively common (I know of 5 examples) with a blank back. I am not aware of a red crofts existing, but could always be wrong. The Nadja is extremely tough with only 2 graded; both of which are part of near sets. Here's mine.

Its widely done, from way back in the tobacco era to now. Topps used to use the same pics on a lot of their cards in the 1960's, and now I see a lot of their recent inserts using the same pics as cards from previous years.

Default tobacco, candy & gum cards.....

There's a similar thread on the "Postwar" side about the reuse/recycling of photos with Topps:

This post on the SABR Baseball Cards blog explains why Topps reused so many player pictures in their 1968 and 1969 sets:
