He was one of my favorite players as a kid here in Cardinals country. I was heartbroken when we traded him and got two bum pitchers for him. Even worse that he went to the hated Mets! Hurt even more when I found out why they traded him.

One of the best defensive first baseman I have seen!

2000+ hits and nearly .300 lifetime, he could hit too, although not with enough power for his position to be a Hall candidate.

I'm with you! Well, at least he didn't go to the hated Cubs. I think that would have killed me!

At the time I think the Mets might have been more hated here. Do you remember the 'Mets are pond scum' t shirts that were pretty popular around this time?

Those were great episodes. The one with the second spitter is always up there on lists of the greatest tv episodes of all time. I loved watching that show and still catch a rerun here and there.
