Default 1962 Post cereal

Are there thin stock, non box cardboard versions known of any of these? Were there salesman samples on thin stock? Any info or explanation for the thin stock appreciated.
Thank you

The Mantle and Maris were printed as a sample inside of the magazine.

Thank you. Are there any other less famous examples or more common players.
Any non magazine ad examples?

With the 62 Posts, outside of the Mantle and Maris, I have not seen any paper thin cards. Depending on what box a card was found on, there are some 62s that have a lighter colored back (off white) and, if I recall correctly, the stock seems to be slightly thinner than the cardboard stock.

Dan Mabey is an expert on backs of each card....you can PM him at "keepmeposted" here on net54

Great info, thanks. I saw references to his books, but did not know if he was on this board. I am primarily a 19th century collector and only venture into this area for Ashburn cards.

Default 1962P Baseball Ashburn Salesman Sample Thoughts

Hello, Bruce and Fellow POSTulates

I have privately responded to Bruce's inquiry, but thought the community might benefit from my thoughts and any experiences you may have.

Regarding your 1962P Ashburn card, represented as a salesman sample, I am not aware of the individual card or complete panels being printed for in-store or promotional purposes. In 1961, 6 salesman samples of complete panels were offered but are distinguishable by being printed on relatively thin textured paper/cardboard.

Although I have comprehensively researched the 1961-63 Post baseball card promotions and assembled master sets, I am reluctant to categorically dismiss the possibility that 1962P salesman samples may have been produced. The best I can offer is for you to send an image -- front and back -- of your Ashburn card and I will provide my opinion. Also, as a quick reference, you can examine the blank back to ascertain if their are adhesive stains/marks. If there are stains/marks, it is a function of the cardboard panel being adhered to the inner cereal box wax liner. Accordingly, if stains/marks appear, it would certainly be indicative that the card is not a salesman sample.

I hope this helps. My personal e-mail address is inrock@homesc.com, if you wish to send a scan of your Ashburn card.

Warm Regards,

Dan

IIRC -- NO ONE knows more about the 1961-63 Post/Jello era than Dan Mabey and I would listen to what he says

Default Post Salesman Sample

In the late 90's a gentleman from Chicago had put up 2 salesman sample kits from Post Cereal. The was a kit for 1961 and a kit for 1962. The minimum bids were out of my range. However, I contacted him and he sent me a xeroxed copy of the 1961 list of cards that were only on cereal boxes. (He charged me 5 dollars) Both kits had samples of cards on thin paper stock.

Default Thank you

Thank you to everyone, and Dan for a separate pm. I will send Dan photos when I get the cards, which are likely not sample cards, and will post more info iin case anyone is interested. I really appreciate the help for someone who collects from a different century.

That is an absolute, undeniable fact!

Love your book on the 1962 Post Canadian, Dan--very, very helpful.

Default Skinned

I am stilled awaiting Dan’s official verdict, but to my untrained eye they are clearly skinned. Sorry for wasting your time. I will be distributing the rest of the lot as Christmas presents to local kids. Thank you all.
