WHAT? Did anyone else see this? I need to know when where and why. I can’t believe someone would do this.

Yep, these have been relisted on eBay every once in awhile since about October. Aesthetically, the composition of these customs actually look pretty cool, especially the Mantle (ie. the framing works with the size).

When? Probably in the mid 50s to early 60s, when baseball cards from this era didn't really have a lot of monetary value.

Where? Probably in some 11 year old's bedroom.

Why? The kid might've already had a complete 1950 Bowman set and wanted to add these so he cut them to fit in with the others? It's hard to tell, but based on the who, when, and where, there probably wasn't much thought put into it.

When you break it all down, they really are just little pieces of old cardboard.

Odd...I've seen quite a few '52 Topps cards that were trimmed down by kids to fit the same size as '52 Bowman stacks. Kids' hands and pockets just did not easily handle different sized cards. But, the thing in this case with the "added" borders seems really suspect. It's difficult to imagine how an eight to ten-year-old graphics editor in days of yore would have managed that. Causes me to think that a more mature - albeit less ethical - adult might be involved.

I feel the same way. I think a old man did it a long time ago. The work is to good. I also think who ever did it knew who Mays and Mantle were. Ok the card were not worth what they are worth today.

Default 1950 Mays/Mantle

If you read the listing, it seems he has many more 1951s altered the same way. Not sure who did it, but they must have had time to burn.

I've got a 1951 Bowman Mays cut to 1950 size, but it's a hatchet job compared to these. Mine's cut right through Willie's name. Once somebody here on Net54 was looking for a very cheap low grade 1951 Bowman Mays to get autographed, and he or she said "condition not important." When I offered my card, the answer was basically that mine wasn't good enough. Oh well.
