The 1938 signed Vander Meer snapshot was taken at the same time as the Willard Hershberger signed snapper that was shown in an earlier post on this thread. I didn't own this when this thread first started.
This photo was likely taken on July 1, 1938 at Pittsburgh Forbes Field, BTW.
Not long after Vandy hurled his back-to-back no-hitters...

Wow, Scott....

That's some serious "can kicking". Even Tom Dempsey would be proud!

Beautiful and amazing HOF-worthy display!

Awesome pic Scott! Here's an Edd Roush signed and dated 1924 ball accompanied by his very own brand cigar box. Kicking the can to you Mark

This is how I remember the Reds from 1969. Listen to them almost everyday in the summer on the radio growing up in Southern Ohio.

Agree- great stuff posted by everyone!

Daryl... that's exactly how I remember them too... the infancy of the Big Red Machine. Awesome photo!

Chris... Killer Roush items. Gotta be among the earliest Single-signed balls on record. And the Cigar Box is to die for. Jealous

Dave... No adjectives can do justice to those holy grail jerseys. Cannot stop looking at them. Ted Klu was a very large man

Default Reds Stuff

What a great thread. This is for Chris Counts as he said he likes 1930s Reds stuff. The picture was taken when the cap was on loan to the Reds for their All Star Game exhibit as Chick Hafey was the Reds first All Star.

"Almost" makes me want to be a Reds fan with all the cool items being pictured. Glad the thread was revived from almost certain death.

I guess I'll have to break out some 1970 items just to remind all the Reds fans who dismantled the machine.

Great stuff; keep em coming...

Default Opening Day 1963 scored scorecard

Contrary to the note, in the left hand corner the game was played on April 8. It was a Monday.

Some guy named "Pete" played his first ML game that day. He walked and scored a run in his first plate appearance.

Default He wasn't with the Reds yet but...

Here's the official Colt .45's press release announcing the signing of 19-year old Joe Morgan. Also pictured is Morgan's application for a Visa to Japan for the 1978 tour.

They're both on the website, "CooperstownExpert.com". The site can be searched by team and every person associated with the Reds will come up. There are a ton of other cool Reds-related pieces there too. Hope you enjoy!

While I'm not a Reds collector I really enjoy viewing all these great items. Especially like the Reds flag and banner and some of the smaller items like the Rose JDM postcard. Of course it's hard to beat the GU items!

Last week I gave a talk at the Newport, Kentucky (directly across the Ohio River from the Reds Stadium) library about early baseball in Northern Kentucky. A guy who I had previously met at one of my book signings came and gave me two pieces of Crosley Field as a gift - a brick and a piece of tile! I'm a big fan of the 1930's Reds and these two pieces now have an honored spot on one of the shelves in my studio, along side a Vander Meer signed ball.

Great thread, let's keep it going!

That's awesome! My first MLB game was at Crosley....the Giants put an absolute whuppin' on the Reds and I've been a fan ever since.

Default 1961 NL Championship Ring

Better to post it here than in August pick ups. According to pages 64-66 of The Pete Rose Story: An Autobiography (World Publishing, 1970), Seghi was the guy who signed Rose in 1960.

Wonderful pickup, Dave...

I would've also pursued that gorgeous Ring, had I been outbid on this. Was very pleasantly surprised that my bid held up. Little Joe is easily my 2nd favorite Reds player of all-time.

The Big Red Machine could never "get over the hump" until he came along, and this Jersey dates to that glorious '75 - '76 time frame.

Default 1940 Bucky Walters

Could have posted this grouping as a December pickup, but it probably better belongs here. Have been after it for a while. In my estimation, Walters is the best starting pitcher in Reds history, especially considering he did not take to the mound until his late 20s (27 I think). Although Bucky won the NL MVP award in 1939, I think 1940 was the better season based on the differences in his World Series efforts (1939 0-2 vs 1940 2-0).

The photo is a Type I Sporting News file photo. If I can find the right material, I will probably restore the Hershberger arm band.

Default Recent Vander Meer Reds photo pickups

Dave,
You and me both, brother.
I recently picked up this undated circa 1938 candid original photo of Vandy & Cincinnati Reds owner Powell Crosley. Condition is not ideal, but I LOVE the image.

June 15th, 1947 original action photo of Vandy pitching complete game win, career win #88. Photo was taken at Crosley Field. Great seats, eh?

Scott,

Nice pics. The jacket Vandy is wearing looks more like 1938 than 1939 or 1940. If 1938, then no wonder his boss is all smiles..

Dave,
That's even better & makes this photo perfect for my collection focused on 1938 Vander Meer. Thanks for the head's up

Recently added this 1914 single signed Buck Herzog ball. The inscription is to Harry Stephens, the Reds club secretary, who I believe played a large role in bringing Herzog to Cincinnati as player-manager.

There is another notation on the ball that is mostly non-decipherable (Begins "The first...") and the score "Cincie 10 - Chicago 1", along withe the date "April 14, 1914", which likely makes this a game ball from opening day at Redland Field and Buck Herzog's first game as manager.
