Default 2013 IBHOF Selection

Arturo Gatti
Virgil Hill
Myung-Woo Yuh
Wesley Ramey
Jeff Smith
Joe Coburn
Mills Lane
Jimmy Lennon Jr.
Colin Hart [journalist]
Arturo “Cuyo” Hernandez [manager]
Ted Carroll [cartoonist]

Gatti and Hill were in several career-contemporary sets.

Smith was in some 1920s sets including the 1925 Exhibit issue:

Coburn was in some 19th century issues and also T220.

I don't know of any cards of Ramey or Yuh.

Of the non-participants, the best item I can find for Ted Carroll is this book:

I know Lane is in one of the 1991 sets.

This is an interesting class. It is nice to see another Olympic medalist (and Native American) enter the hall. I have attended every induction since 1995 (Fighting Harada) and this is the first time I can recall where there will be only one living boxer inducted. If I recall correctly, Mills Lane also has an Olympic connection. I believe he was one of the referees for the 1960 U.S. Olympic boxing trials. I have a grouping of the SF Examiner's original 4x5 negatives from those trials. I seem to recall seeing his name on the sleeve along with Cassius Clay, Wilbert 'Skeeter' McClure and Eddie Crook, Jr., but I would need to check my archives.

I think Yuh and Hill are both living.

Yes, you are correct. It will be good to have one of the great Asian boxers come to the hall. They usually show up for their induction and don't return. Having travelled to Australia 5 times I know that it is about a 30 hour trip with flights and layovers. Even though the flight to Korea is quicker as they fly over the North Pole, it is still a long trek.

The only ones I can recall who have been any challenge over the years were Mike McCallum and Mike Tyson. McCallum was just plain nasty and Tyson was handled so you could not get near him. Hagler, Leonard, Foreman, Duran and pretty much any of the boxing personalities have been at least somewhat available and affable. Hagler has gotten to be very good. LaMotta was very easy and pleasant at the cocktail reception this year. When there is a 'big' name inductee it gets very crowded and you see old men acting like seven year olds. Hearns was that way last year. First visit so all the collectors wanted him. He signed quite a bit, but big crowds around him. A lot of collectors wanted Mugabe, but he is a bit off. He did not sign a lot, but I was able to squeeze a few index cards and a postal cover out of him. All with different signatures within a half hour span. It is still one of the best times for a boxing collector as the Hall of Fame also runs a collectors show on Saturday and a lot of other events for the fans. They recognize that all of the fans/collectors showing up is what supports the Hall.

I am dying to go but it is a very difficult trip for me and comes at a bad time of the summer.
