Default Anonymity and "Alts" on this board

After banning a member, just now, who has been on the board for quite some time due to possibly bad registration info (will supposedly verify later), and another current member asking about a 2nd login, I want to make a quick post on the subject. On this forum only one registration is allowed. Of course there are those sneaky devils who say they registered 2 id's and are lurking out there, in the hiding. Or someone who crawled under the door, so to speak. To them, I say...kewl. You are awesome.
In order to be a member of this forum each member has to have a good day time contact phone number, and first and last name, on file. There are no exceptions. And to that end, most of the times when an "alt" or troll is found out about it is because one of our 7500+ members sees something fishy and alerts me or another moderator. Thanks to everyone for helping keep this a safe place. It seems to work fairly well. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL ON OUR BST. BTW, my motto in this area is "quick to ban but quick to reinstate upon verification". And a generic Rose Postcard.
Happy collecting!!

Also Leon, I got a kick out of the address on the postcard. Just a name with the city/town & state. I guess it got delivered though.

Woburn wasn't all that big then, just over 15000. So it was probably a second or third class post office. Those didn't start carrier delivery until 1912. Until then you had to go to the post office to pick up all mail. At times they'd advertise mail on hand in the local paper.

The even more fun addresses are the older ones, even from major cities.
Within the town or city so little was needed I've seen ones just addressed like
Sam Smith
City

And yes That's literal, made up name but the address was often just "city" *

Of course I've seen others that got a bit more detailed.
Sam Smith
anywhere,
Some county
Some state
Old state road behind Roberts store near the stone bridge.

It's big fun looking at really old mail sometimes.

Steve B

* This was called "drop mail" as it was dropped off at the post office in the same city. When a letter was 3 cents, for years a letter within the same city brought to the post office only cost 2 cents. Not all mail was delivered, some cities didn't get delivery until 1912 although the big cities had it starting in the 1860's and rural delivery began in 1896.

Miss Bond's reputation in Eastern Mass was legendary. Her mail was even delivered without postage. She was well aware that the postman always rang twice and she was always ready.

I wanted to ask you a question about your comment Frank, but then decided that it is probably better that I don't know.

Keep up the good work Leon!

Thanks for the kind words on the forum. Ya'll keep letting me (or another mod) know when you see something funky and we'll keep this place as safe as we can with as few rules as possible.

Edited to add, JMB has verified his registration and is back on the forum.

I want to bump this thread as Joe Ba.rr, JMB, has verified his registration. I know he has some deals going on, on the BST, and that is the reason for this post and bump to the top. To be clear, as long as someone is associated with a phone number, I call, it is probably fine. To me there is at least a little security in being able to track someone down if need be..(as much as is possible on the net).

My mind must be turning to complete mush .... I can't come up with a single reason why someone would want to have two or more IDs for the board.

I had the same thought. All I could come up with is maybe to shill the high-value cards flowing through the BST Auction thread? J/k

They use the second account to stick up for their main account, hype a sale, hype a pickup, and many many more reasons. I have seen a few accounts that I assumed was a second account.

An example is when someone is getting a lot of flack for doing something shady and then an account with just a few posts come on and defend them. Then you check the account and all dozen or so of their post are similar.

Leon, I would like to nominate you to fill the cabinet position as head of Homeland Security, unless President-elect Trump has already done so. Clearly, you have the experience and know how to root out those who seek to use the board for their own nefarious purposes. However, we don't want to lose you to the Washington cabal. John Spencer

We do not want him here in Washington, D.C. Too many morons and idiots on both sides of the aisle. He would get swept up in the verbal diarrhea. I am only here due to a job. I ignore the rectum expectorant that passes for intelligence that bombards us each day.

+1 About four years ago we had a guy show us a fake Doyle, NAT'L card. Then a week later he tried to sell it on eBay, and when we said that it was a fake, he came on and claimed that he had seen the card at a show, it was real, and "I've been trying to buy it from the seller."

Leon banned him. If he had used a second account we may never have caught on that he was schilling a card that he himself owned.

Thanks for keeping this place legit, Leon. Love this board. I've had a couple dozen BST deals in my short time here and all have gone down perfectly.

If she looked at all like Lana Turner, no wonder she was legendary!

I've had a total of two alias on Network 54 over the last 20 years. First was Husband-Of-Tammy but after the divorce I thought it be best to change it.
