Default My Hank Aaron run

I've been collecting Aaron cards since the 1980's. A few years ago I started getting them graded. I've used both PSA and SGC, so I can't really do a registry set, but that's okay since most are low to mid grade. I've always been more interested in getting an example of the card rather than getting the best example. I've also included the checklists which have Aaron's basic card on them, and some related Braves logo, etc. cards. My son is going to inherit the cards, so I've started scanning them in for a list what I have. I thought the scans would also make a good thread. So here they are, loosely arranged by year.

Some from 1957. The Bill and Bob postcard is multi-year, but it fit in here. This will be all for today. I'll post some more next week.

Beautiful collection. This may be a stupid question, but why the two rookies? Is one a variation? I have a number of duplicates in my collection but always curious as to how others approach a player collection.

Great Aarons Robert. I am a fellow Aaron collector and my cards are in similar condition to yours. I have completed the Topps regular issue run, including multi player/leader/all-star cards. I don't have many of the regional or oddball items that you have so I am definitely envious of these pieces. I really like the 1955 Doubleheader. That and the 1964 Topps Stand up are my next goals. Congrats on your great collection!

Really cool to see all this. I collect Aaron as well but never strayed too far beyond the Topps regular issues.

Am curious if you collect his bobbleheads or any other non-card stuff. A favorite I just got is the Braves unissued certificate for Aaron tying the HR record.

I've got a lot of Aaron stuff, too. You'd be surprised how much you can accumulate if you just stick to one player only. I didn't realize how much I had until I redecorated my home office - until then it was all kept in plastic tubs in storage. Please ignore Yoda and Donald Duck.

Default 1976

Not as many regular size cards in '76, but a lot of tallboy sized ones. I just showed the front of the MSA blank back; I showed the backs of the rest. All of the fronts are the same except for the Crane Potato Chips one. Also, I do have a regular Crane disc, but it is back at PSA getting a new label (it was incorrectly labeled when I first got it back). I probably have 10+ more Carousel Snack Bars discs, but I just picked out one for grading.

OMG!! Just amazing! Thanks for posting this other stuff. Happy to see you have the Eau Claire Bears bobble. That one was one of my tougher finds. And do I see you avoided the SAM 500 HR bobble? Part of me thinks I need it to complete my set, but part of me thinks it looks so unlike Hank that it would ruin my display.

I hid him in the back. I did see a Catman Aaron bobblehead on ebay that I liked, but it was priced higher than I wanted to spend.

I never got into covers much, but i do have a lot of wire photos in storage. I tried to keep up with all the modern Topps cards, but after Topps started putting out new cards, color variations, new game used cards, and multiple limited cards(1 of 100, 1 of 10, 1 of 5, etc.), I just gave up on the modern stuff.

A few of the post 1976 cards that I like. On the 1977 Brewers Team card, Aaron is top row, fifth from left.

Default missed cards

Here are two oversized cards I missed and some raw cards that I am waiting on a PSA or SGC sale to get graded. Raw cards, left to right, are: 1962-65 Jay Publishing Type 2 - Batting/Close up; 1958 Jay Publishing Type 1 - Batting; 1964 Hasbro Challenge the Yankees, 1965 Hasbro Challenge the Yankees; 1967 Dexter Press; 1972 Topps Cloth Sticker; 1960 MacGregor Staff; 1967 Topps Pin Up, 1967 OPC Pinup; and 1974 Topps Puzzle (one of my favorite poses).

Yeah, I stay away from the Catmans, however cute, for three reasons.

1. expensive
2. unlicensed
3. heard they break easily in the mail

Always liked the Diamond Jubilee cards. Can't wait to add the Yaz. And those photos of your office decorations are incredible!

@RobertC - If you haven't seen them before, Pennzoni cases are great for displaying card runs. My case was made for 50 raw cards, but I think they also have styles for slabbed.

Thanks, everyone. I should have some more pics soon. I've got 50 more cards at PSA - I'll post them as soon as PSA decides what "50 days" really means. I'm also redoing my office. I got some more really nice items and had to put in a few more shelves.

Robert, I wanted to make sure you knew a new Aaron bobblehead was just released this month...SGA by the Lakeshore Chinooks. Only 1000 issued but several very affordable on the Bay.

Jason,
Thanks. I pre-ordered one off ebay and got it the week after the game. I did notice one thing though. The ads showed Hank with gray hair, but the bobblehead I got had black hair - but not really a problem. Here it is in my showcase.

Just picked up this '73 Topps Pin-up. I really wish I had bought the one years ago that was offered to me for $200; this one cost a little bit more. I get all my Aarons slabbed, but now I have to decide which company. PSA would probably be better for value in the long run, but I already have a '73 Comic in a SGC holder.

Default Pin Up

I think that the '73 Aaron pinup would look great in either holder. If you have one in a SGC holder might as well get one in a PSA holder, but I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Question the guys on this thread might have an answer for.

I noticed that the 1977 TCMA is part of the Hank Aaron Master Set. It would make sense to me were the TCMA a set of contemporary players and the Aaron card showed him on the Brewers. However, given that Aaron is shown as a Milwaukee Brave and the other cards in the set are retired players, its inclusion seems odd to me.

Is it just automatic that any card issued the year after a guy's final season qualifies as Master Set? Or is a judgment call?

Sometimes I wonder why PSA includes a card in the registry. Trying to figure out PSA's "logic" can give you a headache. It might be just to have another card to grade. For example, the Action Cartridge hand-cut "card" and the Transogram side panels were never intended to be separate "cards", but PSA still includes them in the Aaron master set. Why is it that the Plaks checklist is included, but no other checklists (except for team checklists)? Maybe because the Plaks checklist is an expensive card to grade. I do not mean to bust on PSA, because I do use their Aaron master list as a important reference, but sometimes they make you wonder.

Because the Plaks checklist pictures him. That their standard and they're pretty consistent with it. All the 68 Topps CL's picturing players count for those registries, like Marichal and Yaz.

Never thought about that. I guess I'm okay with that as long as PSA is consistent.

I avoid all the post - career stuff, but I made an exception for this Topps Heritage release. I have such a sentimental attachment to 1978-1979 Topps that I just couldn't resist.

Looks like a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Vet.

This is a great thread. Congratulations.

I may not have been paying full attention on the bats, but top to bottom:

1) LS 3000 hit;
2) LS NL MVP;
3) LS HOF Induction brown bat;
4) LS 57 WS black bat;
5) ???;
6) Magnavox 715 commemorative?;
7) LS 715 commemorative?

You know there would be a LS 58 NL Champions black bat, too?

#5 bat is the LS 1976 Bicentennial bat (has the Liberty Bell). #6 is the "very rare" Magnavox bat . I just added another bat on top - A silver Rawlings 715 Commemorative. I know about the 58 NL Champs bat, but the only one I've seen was priced a lot more than I want to spend.

Thanks for sharing your Aaron collection. Wow, it's great! I have one, too, but not as extensive. And I am just like you - happy to take any condition. This was fun to look at.

Slowly getting a few. The RBI Leaders card is a Venezuelan. The Brewers team card is OPC (which was a little harder to find than I was expecting).

Some new additions. The first is a 1976 Bob Parker More Baseball Cartoons checklist. Second is a 1974 Deckle Edge proof (straight edge, white back). Next is a Finnish Sportscaster Rules, then a Swedish Sportscaster Rules. The last two are PWCC pickups (reasonable prices!).

Robert, always a highlight to see your pickups. Can you say more about the deckle proof? Is that Topps? I remember they did a deckle edge set around 1969 or so that had Clemente and others but no Aaron.

Topps issued a test set of Deckle edge cards in 1974. Some good info on them is at http://keymancollectibles.com/baseba...echecklist.htm
Here is a picture of my other two - a regular issue and a gray back straight edge proof.

Robert,

So you picked up the white back proof?!? Do you have the white back deckle as well? I'm still missing the white back for my Brooks collection; tough to find.

I found the white back proof on ebay. It was listed at too high of a price at first, but kept getting lower each time it got relisted. It finally came down to the price I had in mind, so I bought it. I don't have the white back deckle edge Aaron; I don't remember ever seeing one. Just another card I'm still looking for.

Congrats on the white back Deckle proof. That action cartridge is an awesome item I've never seen before.
