Default You Guys Know Anything About CDV's?

Posted By: Addie_Joss

I recently bought a CDV that was said to be given out to Union Soldiers to carry on themselves during the Civil War. The interesting thing about it, aside from its said origin, is that it pictures 100 Union Soldiers and amongst them is one Abner Doubleday. I believe this is likely the only "card" Doubleday has ever appeard on that was issued" during his lifetime. Do you guys know if there is a viable way of going about authenticating the period piece or finding out when and where a CDV was issued? I haven't got it in my possession yet so I don't have any details on whether or not a manufacturer is listed. I am just generally curious. Also, does SGC or PSA handle CDVs? My guess is probably not.

A good bunch of different Doubleday CDV's are known and are pretty common.
You can find them in headshot form, full standing pose and I'm sure there's one around portraying him with his wife.
The composite version you are referring to is the most common.

They can go from the $100's to the $500's since they have some appeal to civil war collectors.

As a baseball CDV collector myself, I don't consider the Doubleday images baseball related but this is a topic for a baseball history forum.

There are no shortages of Doubleday CDVs. If you can post images of the front and verso, likely if it is authentic it can checked against other known Doubleday CDVs. That doesn't mean, though, the CDV is authentic. It could be a reproduction. Others who deal with SGC and PSA can opine as to their policy of authenticating CDVs. Showing it to an experienced 19th century collector, though, would probably be a better idea as such people have more expertise than the grading companies in authenticating CDVs.

Abner Doubleday died in 1893 - ALL Doubleday CDV's were issued during his lifetime.
