Default Question for the Experts

Posted By: Neil

Hello,

I have been lurking (learning) hear for quite some time. Over the past several months using ebay I have compiled over 300 pages of raw data based soley on buying a vintage set and breaking the cards 1 by 1. The profit margins seems to be very large. Then i decided to test it and see how long it actually takes. What i came up with was not a great result. It took me almost 2 weeks to get all of the scans and all of the auctions set up.

I decided to work with a software programmer to develop a quick listing service and also invested in a high powered scanner that i had modified for my needs.

I now can scan and list a full set in about 4 hours.

I am about to start breaking 5-7 sets per week. I was trying to guage interest and find out if any of the board members here would be intersted in a unique consignment opportunity with me? I realize that most of the members here are at the forefront of the industry and I was just trying to see if I could get into your circle?

If this message is in any way offensive at all please know that i meant no harm at all.

Thanks!

Neil

You should share some examples of your ebay auctions. It has not been my experience lately that the sum of the parts has been larger than the whole.

Good luck either way.

Neil,

With the info you listed below, yes a complete set and selling them separate or in smaller lots can be tough. The process does take some time, I do have a system that I use that speeds this up. What takes long is the scanning; pictures sometimes are better and faster. The descriptions not too bad just need to explain the card or cards well

My site is below, and I have a banner on this site as well, I maybe able to help you out.

The only way for the profit margin on a set to be large is if the set can be bought cheaply. And since there are many people doing the same thing, that can be difficult. It happens occasionally, but I find most of the time the profit margin is modest.

I was referring to vintage sets; sets from the 60's apparently have a different break value. But the amount of work you need to do to sell all those cards one at a time is significant.

Neil - how much did you have to pay in ebay and paypal fees? Or is that included in the $996 figure?

It takes me now about 5 hours total. My profits after paypal and ebay fees are normally about 600-2500 per set.

5 times a week is the plan

I would think you need to pick your sets wisely.  Also, I think your SOURCE would eventually dry up.   I know the hardest thing for me, as a dealer, is it to get new products/cards at a price that I can profit from.  I often sell cards at cost or even below cost in hopes of getting buyers to buy other cards that don't move as fast.

Good luck though and let us know of your success.
