Larry, congrats on knocking out some more 72 highs!

I like that set, but it falls in the narrow window between my 2 vintage player collections; Cappelletti's last Topps card was 1970 and Hannah's first Topps card was 74. 71-73 is kind of a no man's land in my collection. But I know the 72 set is a bear to collect.

Nice pick-ups Adam! Love the Kemp rookie, I had to talk myself out of that one, but glad to see it ended up in good hands.

I picked up the lot of (20) 1962 Post Football from Sterling's last auction, one short print Dick Nolan. Received it in the mail in less than a week. All of these nightmare stories I read of auction houses, and Lee's single man operation keeps kicking butt!

Thanks, Ty. The Kemp has been high on my want list for a while, plus for a 5.5 it's pretty nice. Congrats on getting that Post lot! I was watching it too and I think you got a great deal. Sterling is simply the best. I can't wait to see what's coming in their next auction.

I picked up a lot of six "Risque Football Postcards" including these two. I like that they have messages on the back, postmarks and stamps. I know nothing about them.

Attended the card show at the County Center in White Plains, NY yesterday. I picked up a couple of Kenny Washington 1954 Leaf RC's. SCG was setup for on site grading. Never used them before, but for convenience, gave them a try. I'm very pleased with the presentation.

herbc, those Kenny Washington cards look great in the SGC holder. Some cards just pop a lot more in the SGC holder than PSA or BVG. Very nice pickups. Congrats.

JB: I got serious about my football sets at the Baltimore National in 2012. Glad to knock off the Philadelphia sets and need just 20 cards for my Fleer run, and 23 cards for my Topps run. How about my Bowman sets? THAT is another story as the '48 (need 23) '50 (need 17) '51 (need 12) '52L (need 54) '52S (need 54) are TOUGH!

I know a lot of you are still getting to know me. I introduced myself by way of a thread showing most of my Gino Cappelletti collection. Well I also collect HOF lineman John Hannah. Here is a link to my PSA master set, right now in its very early stages:

Two years before his '74 Topps rookie card, Hannah was included in a deck of playing cards put out by the U of Alabama. To me, this is the #1 Hannah card to get, a really cool pre-rookie. In the master composite, it's given 5.0 weighting, equal to his Topps RC and the '77 Topps Mexican. However, a quick perusal of the PSA pop report plus 6 months of scouring eBay and other websites all make it pretty clear that his '72 Bama playing card is much tougher to locate than the other 2. There are a grand total of 3 PSA graded copies of the card.... for now. Soon there will be a 4th; I got this in the mail today:



Besides the Hannah, the other key card is of his legendary coach, Bear Bryant. Both of these will be in the mail on Monday, to eventually land at PSA.



I'm really excited about this purchase!! It came from an amateurish listing, ending on a Wednesday afternoon, that neither showed nor mentioned the Hannah. I won it for about 15% of my snipe. STEAL!!

This strays from my Texas born player collecting, but as a kid in the '70's reading about all the greats from the early days of football "Blood" was a favorite. Probably had a lot to do with his nickname. One of my favorite pickups
in quite a while.

Yes, it does have great eye appeal. No, I'm not doing the set. Namath has always been a favorite of mine. Him playing for the Jets got me interested in watching football.
He was not only one to watch on the field. His style and off field activities were interesting to follow in the newspaper. I wanted to be Broadway Joe.

His card is part of my NY sports characters collection. A collection within my collection. Athletes who are not only good at their game but also different, sometimes controversial with a style all their own.

At our local card show on Saturday, I picked up my submission from Beckett Grading. I submitted three for a friend and went ahead and put this one in.

I picked up several eBay wins here recently, and the first arrivals came yesterday. I really don't know anything about these guys but like to read what Wikipedia has to say about them.

1952 Bowman Large
#130 Dom Moselle enlisted in the US Army after his High School graduation in 1943 and played four years in the NFL returning kicks and acting as a back-up. Taught PE at The Univ of Wisconsin-Superior for 25 years and died in 2010.
#126 Steve Romanik is the most expensive card in this group ($350 NM) it's one of the high numbered SPs. Played six years in the NFL with 13 TDs and 36 INTs, but led the Bears in passing in 1952 under George Halas. Became Director of Parks in his town and died in 2009.
#57 Wayne Millner elected to the Pro Football HOF in 1968 and was a WWII vet. In the 1937 NFL Title game he caught two TD passes from Sammy Baugh (55 and 78 yards). Died in 1976.

Hi Larry, Love the cards and write ups. I had Millner as the 3rd End off the board behind Hutson and Hewitt in the 30s fantasy draft thread. I think the card of him as a coach that you show is probably his 1st mainstream card, but I'm pretty sure he appeared on at least one matchbook in the 30s. The last interesting point is that he mentioned taking the job of Bull Tosi (whose 35 Chicle card is a condition rarity) in an interview.

Millner is in the Wheaties set and a few Redskins matchbooks from the 30s / early 40s.



If you seen one of these out there, snag it as its one of the most difficult Wheaties box cuts to find.

I have the Millner matchbooks too but don't have them scanned yet.

This one certainly isn't as old as most on this board, but I had to share. This one was in my mailbox Friday. It turned out to be a random act of kindness. I had no idea that it was coming! It's in fantastic shape too. I might drop it off on Saturday to get graded.

Went to the WSSCA show yesterday and picked up a handful football cards, including a Tarkenton rookie. Wasn't Mitchell with the Redskins in 1962?

1952 Bowman small #122 James Phelan QB Notre Dame 1915-17 and WWI vet. College and pro coach from 1920-1951, elected College HOF (as a coach) in 1974. Died in 1974.

1952 BowmanLarge #13 Tom Fears of Mexican-American descent Pro Football HOF 1970. A WWII vet, his Dad was a Japanese prisoner of war? Played in the NFL '48-'56 and coached '59-'75. Led all NFL receivers his first 3 years in the league died in 2000.

1948 Bowman #22 Sammy Baugh RC the most "expensive" in this group NM $450. Two time All-American college TCU. NFL Washington Redskins 1937-52 Pro Football HOF charter class 1963 and coached '55-'64. Raised by a single mom they moved to Sweetwater Texas when he was 16. I WAS IN SWEETWATER LAST WEEK MY SISTER LIVES THERE LOL! One of the greats, he died in 2008.

1948 Bowman #107 Sid Luckman RC Chicago Bears QB '39-'50 Pro Football HOF 1965. Bears owner and coach George Halas convinced the Pittsburg team to draft Luckman and trade him to the Bears. Luckman didn't seem to want to play pro ball but would rather work at a trucking company. That was until Halas visited Luckman and his wife in their small apartment with a $5,500 contract (he signed it). At the end of the 1943 season he volunteered and served stateside with the Merchant Marine and although he wasn't allowed to practice with the team he was allowed to play on game day. Died in 1998.

I picked these beaters up because I'm working on the All-American set. I want to just complete it first, then will work on the upgrades. I've actually already upgraded the Hickman.

I was going to post a thread to update with my progress on the 55AA set, but didn't know if people might find it overkill.

I agree, I slowly built a PSA 8 set. It was a lot of fun a good time commitment. The players are timeless and the cards are some of the best looking out there. I've since moved on to other areas, but always love this set.

1952 Bowman "SMALL"

Arnold Weinmeister: Played only six pro seasons in the AAFC and NFL, yet was elected into the Pro Football HOF class of 1984 died 2000. (I need to read up on the AAFC which was a competing pro league)

Howard Hartley: played five years in the NFL for the Steelers and Redskins died in 2006 not much info about him.

Tex Coulter: played 7 years with the Giants died in 2003 not much info about him.

Pete Pihos: #92 most "expensive" in this group NM $75. Played 9 years Eagles. College HOF '66. Pro Football HOF '70. WWII D-Day vet Bronze and Silver Star. His daughter made a couple of documentaries about his struggle with Alzheimer’s I checked Netflix not there. Appears to be a football stud and hero! Died 2011.

Jack Blount: no info.

Steve Romanik: QB Bears and Cardinals 1950-54. died in 2009

Henry Minarik: Played with the Steelers just one year with 35 receptions and one TD. Still living age 88 I wonder what he went on to do, his stats weren't awful?

Louis Creekmur: Player with the Lions ten years and never missed a game! Had his nose broken 13 times since players often didn't wear a face mask. His nose looks a little messed up on his card? Pro Football HOF 1996. died in 2009.

Tom Fears: discussed in previous entry. LOL

James Finks: Played six years with the Steelers. In 1964 became GM of the Vikings and put together "The Purple People Eaters" and also hired coach Bud Grant. Served in front offices Bears Saints and Chicago Cubs. When NFL Commissioner Pete Rozell retired, James was a leading candidate to replace him. But it seems there was some "hijinks" going on with some of the newer owners, and Paul Tagliabue was eventually hired. Pro football HOF 1995. died lung cancer 1994.

Dante Lavelli: #73 most "expensive" in this group at $75 in NM. Nicknames "glue fingers" and "Mr Clutch" NFL HOF 1975 player 10 years with the Browns. In 1942 Dante was drafted into the US Army D-day he landed on Omaha Beach also saw action at the Battle of the Bulge and the fight for Bastogne. 1 in 5 members of his Division was killed in action. died in 2009. New "book" price for this card is $1,000 this guy is a HERO!

Jerome Smith: played in 29 NFL games, then became an NFL position coach for 11 years. died in 2011.

John Kastan: NY Giants 9th round pick looks like he never played for them, and no other information.

Steve Owen: Pro football HOF 1966 played in the NFL 10 years, and coached the NY Giants from 1930-1953. WWI vet, died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1966.

George Conner #19 (short print) is the most "valuable" card in this lot NM $300. College and Pro HOFer played eight years in the NFL. WWII vet weighed only three pounds at birth. died in 2003.

Buddy Young: One of the shortest men to play the game at only 5"4" played 10 years in the NFL. First Colt to have his number retired. First African-American exec hired by the NFL. died in a car wreck in 1983.

John Rapacz: Played 7 years in the NFL then became a Hall of Fame High School coach. died in 1991.

Fred Benners: Played one year in the NFL then became a lawyer in Dallas. Considered one of the best players to play college at SMU. Looks like there is a collection of some sort of Fred at SMU. He is 85 years old.

Jack Christiansen #129 RC is the most "expensive" card in this group at $300 in NM condition. Raised in an orphanage. Pro football HOF played with the Lions for 8 seasons, then coached college and pro teams for 30 years. died from cancer in 1986.

Still "chipping away" at my 1952 Bowman sets and added these The most "expensive" in this group is the #85 Large Andy Robustelli RC. Pro football HOF 1971, and a WWII vet. This card "books" for $225 in NM condition. The Ray Mathews card was purchased cheap, with tape on the front. I just picked the tape right off leaving just a bit of residue
