Default November Pick Up Thread

I'll start the November pick up thread. Picked up these nice early bats. Any idea what time period these would be from?

Default Tigers Pennant

I picked up this early 1910's era (I believe) Tigers oversized pennant with small stitching at a local card shop. It has the obvious damage, but still has great color and graphics and will look great framed up.

^^^^ Fantastic pennant! I would say the good outweighs the bad.

Default Rmy

Happy Joe Finneran and Claud Derrick from the RMY auction on Saturday. Finneran played for Yankees late in career in 1918. No images in NYAL uni that I am aware of and any original image is pretty scarce. Looks to be a Conlon distributed by Paul Thompson.

A few photo pickups...

Grover Alexander with the House of David - this photo was the image used for the postcard that turns up from time to time, a 1920s shot of Alexander, and Bob Feller laughing it up with a young fan...

Epic photos, Chris....

You've been slaying it lately with Type 1 Photos of HOFers! Especially love the Bob Feller image with the Panama-hatted fans, the cute kid, the touching scene and the killer Chief Wahoo Jacket.

Congrats Buzz, on the Finneran. I thought the combination of Conlon's handwriting and the Thompson stamp was pretty cool, glad you ended up with it.

Thanks Mark! I have had a fortunate hot streak - the jacket and the smiles on Feller and the kids face looked so natural; it makes for a great shot!

Got a great photo of Ed Barney from PWS. Barney played 11 games for Yankees in 1915. Went to Pittsburgh same year. Crisp image from Conlon.

I just picked this up. The best part was I was able to delete four ebay searches. Because these are sometimes missing one of the nameplates, I had searches for "cepeda+pen, sun valley+cepeda, sun valley+baseball and sun valley+pen." The Sun Valley Dairy was in Bernal Heights, not far from Candlestick. The Mays is hard to find. The Cepeda is non-existent. I believe these were given out to retailers/distributors. While not exactly rivaling the quality of a Spalding trophy, there is a bit of detail in these, including the correct numbers on Mays' and Cepeda's backs. It came from Mike Sadek's kid. Mike was a backup catcher for the Giants in 1973 and from 1975-81. Over his career, Mike averaged 48 games pers year, 9 RBIs, .6 HR and a .226 BA. Not exactly HOF numbers. More known for his pranks, here's a picture of Mike with a case of Miller High Life, maybe after he hit one of his homeruns. He was also Robert DeNiro's body double in an awful movie (which I love) called "The Fan."

My little statue is missing its pen. If anyone has one of these old skinny pens lying around, please PM me.

edit: I have a buddy who is a Giants collector and lifelong fan, like me. I call him "Rainman" because he has an uncanny ability to remember every season and every game of his youth. You could ask him "who did the Giants open against in 1964?" and he'd tell you the team and the winning pitcher. Rainman remembers the Sadek picture as being taken after his first major league HR.

Great pic, and congrats on an impossible find!

If I had the right pen, I'd send it to you Rob... But here's perhaps the next best option. I believe the original pens were Ivory colored, to match the holder portion (not stark white). These are waaaay tougher to find than you'd think, but I found one on eBay that might work well (and won't set you back much money).

This was by far the best example I could locate in the half hour I had available...

Hope it works for you and congrats again!

Not exactly a pickup thread, but I got some photos authenticated/classified by PSA and got them back. A focus of my collection is the path of the integrators (Jackie, Campanella, Newcombe, Doby etc etc) before they made MLB and these photos represent some of that journey for Jackie (UCLA, Military, Negro Leagues and Montreal Royals). The Ted Williams is adjacent to my WWII baseball collection (that is a photo from the Korean war), but I loved the photo and the way it expands the view of a great ballplayer beyond his life on the field.

If anyone can help turn the photos (and/or tell me how to do so, so I don't always have this issue).

Thanks!

I appreciate that, Mark. I’m gonna hit up a few nearby antique shops and see if they have a suitable pen in their “junk” pile.

It's fairly uncommon for me to buy a non-football item for my personal collection, but this one is just too great. This cover was done by the great Edward Penfield in 1902 for Collier's magazine. They used it a few years later for a stand-alone print titled "Three Men on Base", and it was also featured on the cover of "The Baseball Book" in 1911.

Incredible Photos Jeff! Those are spectacular. Well I struck out in the recent Hunt auction. I was the under bidder on the Danny Murtaugh cap…as usual. The following day I picked up this Al Oliver game worn hat. That took a bit of the sting out. I’ll be sending in for Scoop to sign for me next week. BTW what does Al need to do in order to get some love? Even the Pirates have failed to honor him with induction into their HOF.

Very cool, and congrats to adding the cap to your collection, Here is Al Oliver's 1982 batting helmet that I got from my close friend who was batboy for the Expos from 1979-1982, I got it signed by Al earlier this year in Montreal, I was able to photomatch it

I was able to pick up a section sign from Notre Dame stadium circa 1950’s-60’s. Sign is double sided

I just watched Rudy again and found this style sign in the movie. You can tell that they’re double sided.

Awesome lids, Guy and Mike!

The Oliver Cap is fantastic and just as good as Murtaugh IMHO. Ridiculous that he's not in Cooperstown, much less the Pirates HOF. Some crazy prices in that last Hunt Live Auction.

And awesome photomatch on the Oliver Expos Helmet! How lucky that it had that little red blotch, that enabled you to positively match it... good karma!

Tonight, at Heritage I landed my first GU hockey shirt. It's a pre 1980 Olympic jersey worn by Steve Christoff during the first exhibition games leading up to the Miracle on Ice Olympic Gold Medal victory.

What makes it special, besides the obvious historical significance (and the fact Steve was one of the team's top scorers in the pre-Olympic games) is that he and I attended the same schools, from grade school through high school. He was a year ahead of me.

Also cool is the fact he was the model for the Hobey Baker award, and a star player for the University of Minnesota. So, his place in hockey history is quite secure, especially locally.

Knowing nothing about GU hockey shirts. I asked a buddy, who knows an expert on them, if the jersey looked right, and its value. The answer received was yes, from the pictures it looked good, Christoff jerseys are difficult to find from any team, and the value range bracketed what I ended up spending. So, it's my Christmas present to myself this year.

Awesome pickup Mark...

Hockey Jerseys are among the most attractive of all of sports. But if I ventured into that territory, I'd be broke quickly. Love the Christoff Jersey... Wasn't he a star player for the Minnesota North Stars as well?
