Default First T206 Team Set Complete

My goal for collecting T206 is to create team sets with as few duplicate backs per team as possible. With the arrival of the Jake Stahl glove shows this weekend, I’ve completed my first team set (Red Sox) with zero duplicate backs. No crazy backs in this team set but it doesn’t matter as the goal has been accomplished.

Carrigan: AB 350 w frame
Stahl (glove shows): EPDG
Arellanes: Tolstoi
Kleinow: Old Mill
Wagner (bat left): Sov 150
Cicotte: Sov 350
Wagner (bat right): Polar Bear
Spencer: Sweet Cap 150/649 OP
Niles: Sweet Cap 150/30
Lord: Sweet Cap 350/30
Stahl (no glove): Pied 150
Speaker: pied 350

The other part of this, and I don’t want to sound all sappy, but I really love how cards in this set came from so many different Net54 members: Ted Z, Jeff Throm, Luke, Nate from The Coop, etc. This site and the people here have meant alot to me over the last few years and as this T206 set that I ultimately build will stay with me forever I love the idea of some of the individual pieces coming from you all.

Anyway, Red Sox set with 0 duplicate backs complete. On to the next.

Thanks, guys. It’s a fun project. Secondary goal is to get at least 1 copy of each back (minus Ty Cobb) in the master set. We’ll see how that plays out.

As for the next team to tackle, I’m closest on the Reds - 11/23 with no duplicate backs. If you see any brown Hindu, AB 460, or Cycle 460 Reds for sale, let me know!

I like that. And having done that by a team, you seem quite happy with it. Great!

110 years ago collectors weren't gathering these cards and sorting them by Beckett numbers... the cards were sorted by team, and then alphabetically. Bert Sugar's The Sports Collectors Bible have these cards sorted by team, and then alphabetically by name. There were 4 editions of this useful book, the 4th is best, followed closely by the 3rd. You can affordably find them on eBay, ABEBOOKS, and Alibris. Great books for lots of reasons, but specifically helpful when collecting them by team.

If you remove a team of T206s from the sheets and sort them by series, 150, 350,460, then look at the fronts, you can see the uniform and pose changes to better learn the backs by looking at the fronts; eg, most of the portraits are on series 150 cards.

I see Speaker in a slab. When I've got a card that I haven't yet broken it out of a slab, I see if I can find a reprint card to fill the space in the binder sheet.

I look forward to seeing the next team!

It is always fun to see another approach to collecting T206...and this particular T206 route should be a fun challenge.

Nice team set. I did something similar with Providence (8 players) with just Piedmont and Sweet Cap and then started to add other backs. I've got 10 different backs for the team now.

Cool, Chris!
Might I suggest the next team for ya (meant in fun);
The Dallas Giants!
I completed it a while back; putting together the story of why Molly is in the set in the first place.

Default 2nd Team Set with 0 Duplicate Backs Complete!

As some of you may remember, my goal for completing the set of 520 is to have as few duplicate backs per team set as possible. Following up on Boston (AL) from last year I just completed Washington with 0 duplicate backs:

Groom: Carolina Brights
Ganley: Hindu
Elberfield (fielding): Pied 460/42
Milan: Cycle 350
Unglaub: American Beauty 350
Gray: EPDG
Schaeffer: Sov 460
Johnson (hands at chest): Sweet Cap 460/42
Brown: Sov 350
Delehanty: Sweet Cap 150 OP
Shipke: Sov 150
Street (fielding): Old Mill
Tannehill: Polar Bear
Conroy (fielding): Sweet Cap 150/30
Elberfeld (Wash): Sweet Cap 350/25
Conroy (with bat): Pied 460/25
McBride: Sweet Cap 350/30
Johnson (portrait): Pied 150
Street (portrait): Pied 350

Like Boston, so many Net54 members helped me along the way. Thanks to Jay K and Luke, where many of the cards came from; Ryan C. for the Johnson I needed; Kris S. Where I got the first few from this team; Eric S, who helped me finish up with Ganley; and Wazoo, who I didn’t get any cards from, but who put me hot on trail of Elberfeld and Unglaub.

Another example of this site making collecting so much more enjoyable.

On to the next team!

Congrats Chris on another team completion!

I am curious how you plan on handling teams like the Cubs (37 subjects) and especially the New York Giants (53!! subjects). Perhaps allowing 2 or 3 of the same backs?

Thanks, Brian - yes there are teams where 0 duplicate backs aren’t physically possible. In those cases I’m going for fewest duplicate backs. I’ve mapped it out and think that even with the Giants I should be able to do it with no more than 2 of the same back, as long as I can find my way into some Lenox and Uzits and such. (fingers crossed!)

Even a team like the Reds, I won’t be able to do 0 dup backs. As long as I can do as few as reasonably possible, I’ll consider the project a success.

It’s been fun, and making connections with people who know what I’m doing and in need of, and then pointing me in the right direction if they find something that fits has been a real joy.

Thanks to several Net54 members I just completed my third t206 team with 0 duplicate backs. Philadelphia (NL) joins Washington and Boston (AL) as finished with 0 duplicate backs. I missed out on a Kitty Bransfield Hindu posted here recently so no very special backs for this team, but the goal is 0 dup backs where possible and that was accomplished. Cards for this team came from Luke, Nate, Jay, Bob, Kris and maybe some other Net54ers. So grateful for this forum. Breakdown is below. Onto the next! I’m VERY close on Cincinnati and getting there on Pittsburgh.

Mcquillan (with bat): AB 350 No Frame
Doolin: EPDG
Doolan (batting): Tolstoi
Titus: Old Mill
Covaleski: Sov 150
Jacklitsch: Sov 350
Magee (with bat) Polar Bear
Mcquillan (throwing): Sweet Cap 150/649 OP
Bransfield: Sweet Cap 150/25
Dooin: Sweet Cap 150/30
Knabe: Sweet Cap 350/30
Magee (portrait): Pied 150
Doolan (fielding): Pied 350

Default 520 set with minimal dup back per team update: 4th team complete

Today’s mail brought me a little closer to my goal of completing the T206 set of 520 with as few duplicate backs per team as possible.

Cincinnati is “complete.” This is the first team out of the 4 I’ve now finished where I wasn’t able to do it with 0 duplicate backs but I think I did as best as possible without a Drum - 3 duplicates. (If someone has a Cincinnati Drum available I’d love to connect).

As with the 3 teams I already completed (Boston AL, Washington, Philadelphia NL) at least half the cards - probably more - came from Net54 members - thank you, all! Here is the back breakdown:

Broad Leaf 350: Tom Downey (fielding)
Carolina Brights: Billy Campbell
Cycle 350: Dick Egan
American Beauty 350 (with frame): Dode Paskert
EPDG: Dick Hoblitzell
Tolstoi: Mike Mitchell
Old Mill: Art Fromme
Sov 350 (Apple): Tom Downey (batting)
Sov 350 (Forest): Bob Bescher (portrait) & Harry Gasper
Sov 150: Ed Karger
Polar Bear: Rebel Oakes
Sweet Cap 460/25: Clark Griffith (batting)
Sweet Cap 460/30: Bob Bescher (hands in air)
Sweet Cap 350/25: Larry McLean
Sweet Cap 350/30: Miller Huggins (portrait) & Mike Mowrey
Sweet Cap 150/649op: Clark Griffith (portrait)
Sweet Cap 150/25: Bob Ewing
Sweet Cap 150/30: Bob Spade
Pied 350: Jean Dubuc & Miller Huggins (hands at mouth)
Pied 150: Hans Lobert
