Default Goodwin Kalamzoo Bats cabinet - not Denny Lyons

Lot17 in the latest Goodwin auction is described as:
http://tinyurl.com/l9j5qlv

...Charlie Bastian will never be enshrined in Cooperstown, and fortunately for him this Kalamazoo Bat card more than secures his legacy. On the other hand, Denny Lyons was a formidable hitting 3rd baseman for the Athletics...

This seems to be a long standing error that probably traces back to the identical photo that was misidentified in the NYPL Spalding collection. The photo actually depicts Harry Lyons laying on the ground with Bastian standing.

Thanks Mark - that explains a lot. I've compared the 'Harry Lyons' photo to 'Denny Lyons' photos in the past, as I have an 1880-90's photo that depicts a player who looks like 'Harry' (who I thought was also Denny) and it got very confusing. Thanks for clearing up things.

I hesitated too long on that one, and missed the initial bid period, but I think it's still a great value, being 'one of one' and a large clear mounted baseball albumen. in my opinion it's even cooler given that it doesn't have an ad.

Man I love those Kalamazoo Bats. Tuff as they come, scarce as hen's teeth. Good info on the photo, thanks. Dave

Thanks for your hobby reference work, Mark. Lyons is a popular Kbats depicted player. Do you know if the other cards of him (Harry) are the same in the set?

Here is one and I think there is one or two more. I believe my good friend Kevin St. aka Baseball Rarities has it for sale.

LOL - That one was identified as Harry Lyons in the online Spalding collection (56789), and clearly also on the Bats card. So is he Harry Lyons or is he Denny Lyons? Well, he is neither. The photo depicts Jim Devlin (on the left).

I wrote an article about the Spalding collection problems here (page 9, see table page 13):
http://sabr.box.com/shared/static/55...xd1jbmc6ln.pdf

Probably all of the Bats images can be found in the online Spalding collection, and those that are misidentified are in the page 13 table.
