Default Type card collecting...Tough issues..Really Tough issues

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy

I'm curious to as which of these ten (10) vintage issues our type collectors would rate as the most difficult to find:

D304

D310 Pacific Coast Biscuit

D311 Pacific Coast Biscuit

D322 Tip Top Bread

D359

E90-2

E104

E136 Home Run Kisses

T208

T222 Fatima

I currently have an example of the following:

E90-2
E104
E136
D322
D310

I would have to rate the T208s & D359s at the top of the list as most difficult, and after that the others are a toss up.

Patrick

Hi Patrick,
I'm not really a type collector, but I do about a 3-6 searches on Ebay a day, so I get to see a lot of what's out there. Accounting just for Ebay, the ones that seem to come up the least are T208 and D359's. So your probably right where those are concerned. HRK's don't show up on Ebay too often anymore and the same was true of D310's until recently. I've seen more than a couple examples of D322,D311, D304, E90-2, and T222 come up for sale over the past year or two. Not too sure about E104.

Of your ten choices, it's no contest-the T208 Firesides by a country mile.

T208 Firesides followed by the D359 & E104s

Would be interesting to add some other cards to that list and see what people think:

D382 Tarzan
D380 Clements Bread
T214 Victory
T217 Mono
E221 Bishop & Co.
E222 AWH
E224 Texas Tommy
1911 Big Eater
1912 J=K
1913 Voskamps
1926 Kut Outs

T208's definitely. I've handled nearly every rarity, including eight different Just So's. Don't believe I've ever had a single T208.

e104 type 3s are also pretty difficult.
the other two types aren;t so much as types.

I agree with t208 and d359 being the toughest.
d359 can be acquired as a type.
t208 may not be found for years at a time.

yea...glen's list sure adds a monkey wrench into the equation. T208's for sure are most difficult from the original list. Wow Barry...never had one!

To add a couple more to Glen's expanded list of toughies:

Western Playgrounds
E-Unc. Cardinet Candy Oakland Oaks (The only ones I've ever seen were on this Forum. A few board members who own examples posted some pics of them awhile back. I've never seen one anywhere else.)

Correction: I have seen one other example somewhere else. I found a pic of one (Olmstead) in a xeroxed copy of a 1977 hobby newsletter called Sports West that a fellow board member gave me.

T222's are fairly easy to find if you are looking to buy a single example for a type collection...there are one or two going on EBay most of the time.

If you are looking for a specific player or looking to complete the set, some cards almost never turn up and it would be a different story.

I'm finding these to be quite hard as well, to say the least. SOme of you may remember me from a while ago when i posted the message after i found my great grandfathers collection of these. Im now 7 away from the set, and can't seem to find any out there for sale, let alone any i need.

(This is a great site, i've been reading fairly often, maybe i'll start posting more now...keep it up)

The Niagra Baking issue?

Very, very tough! Much tougher than most of the other issues mentioned here. In some sense, it is an overprint, but in another sense, it is a completely separate issue, as it is a baking overprint on a (previously) candy issue.

I agree, Marc. The overprint turns the card into an ad for something different, with different packaging and different manner of distribution, making the card a representative of a different set.

Can we see a picture of the Niagra Baking card?

First off the original list imo....hardest to easiest (none too easy here)

T208
E104(-3) not -1 or -2
D359
D304
E136 Home Run Kisses
D310 Pacific Coast Biscuit
D311 Pacific Coast Biscuit
D322 Tip Top Bread
E90-2
T222 Fatima

after the 1st four they are very close and could be swapped around a little imo....

I have a pic of a Niagra Baking overprint in an old magazine but am too lazy to look for it. It's a fairly small purple overprint. Now for some other really tough ones..

T231 Fans Cigarettes
H812 NY Baseball Club
M101-4 Holmes to Homes Bread (another d series wannbe)
T207 Red Cross
R308-2 Tatto Orbit (still need if anyone has one laying around)

regards all

Don't forget the E98 Old Puts in your rarity on ebay study. I don't remember a single Old Put on ebay in the last few years and only a few in mastro, lipset, sloate etc. auctions.
Also, I think the D311s are a heckuva lot tougher than most think. If you disagree, sell me yours

what about the ty cobb old put that recently sold for 5K on ebay??? But, yes, they're quite rare. Then there's the baltimore newsday/e94's as well...the list goes on and on!

I've always been under the impression that e90-3s were tougher than 2s. And yes, there is a huge availability disparity between e104 type 3 and the type 1 & 2. I don't even wnat to think about Firesides. Selling those 6 cards will always haunt me.

I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

Adam, what is that from? Exhibit? Leon, neat card. I've never seen one before except in a book.

I would definately add my ugly little 1910 All Star Base-Ball set in the mix for pretty rare type cards.

(This was in no way a plug for my article in the current issue of Old Cardboard)

Great article by the way. Those guys are pretty fascinating! I still don't understand how you figured out that the poses were the same as T3?
Did it come to you in a dream?
Anyways, I'll probably never own one, but it's nice to know the particulars of the set and I appreciate the time that you spent researching and writing.

Thorpe was in quite a few westerns as (surprise) an Indian after his athletic career was over. It took me several years to find this card; I got it at last year's National. I recall seeing only 2-3 others in 30 years of collecting.

Coincidentally, I recently picked up some strip cards that match this set style including one that matches exactly with its exhibit big brother. So, my new holy grail is a Thorpe strip card matching this one.

I appreciate the feedback on the article!

Without getting this thread to far off topic, let me just say that I can't take credit for the portion tying the cards to the T-3 poses.

That connection was made by a couple of very observant posters here when I first found this board a year ago and shared some of the cards from that set.

Lyman and I just took the liberty of researching it further and including that in the article.
