Default Remove Scratches from SGC and PSA cases?

Posted By: Richard

Does anyone know of some method or polish that can remove those nasty scratches from the SGC and PSA cases? This seems to be a problem because when the cases are scratched that can really impair the beauty of the card in the case.
Any thoughts, opinions would be welcome.
Thanks

is to pay the $5.00 or so for re-holdering. I've had no success removing scratches from these plastic tombs. In fact any attempt might make the holder look worse.

I echo Steves idea, or NEVER touch your cards slabbed or not.

I bought a PSA graded T206 once that had a price sticker affixed over the hologram. When I peeled it, it left a terrible residue. The best thing to use for that is a dry cloth and drop some alcohol on the sticky residue, but when I rubbed it off, it took the hologram off with it. Had to get a new holder for that one.

....just use a piece of scotch tape, and then apply, peel, apply, peel, until it comes off....

My friend purchased a product from an auto store for polishing plastic that did a good job. The original scratch was still visible but much fainter.

The Meguiars Plastic Polish from an auto store works nicely. It is a two step process. If the scratch is not deep and just a surface scratch, then with a little elbow grease it should polish out. Then you dont have to send the card away to a grading company and pay $5 plus the shipping.

$5 for reholdering is the best bet.

also try to keep your slabs in the thin clear sleeves for protection.

my "sticker goo" story is that i used nail polish remover on the slab and it totally screwed-up the plastic (i should have won the Darwin Award for that one...)

You can't remove a scratch... just cover it up like a scratch on a car

Thanks for all the ideas.

Never tried it myself... That spray stuff they used to sell at Blockbuster to fix DVD scratches. I'd imagine you would need to spray the entire surface and not just the scratched spot.

Call up a automotive supply company, auto zone or another and ask for plastic scratch remover. I used this on my cars lights and watch crystals and it works great. It does take a little time and effort but it warks for under 10 bucks and will last for a long long time.

should work for the goo too. Don't use goo gone......it will alter the substance of the case....

I use Novus products to remove scratches and glue residue (from price stickers) from slabs. Actually works pretty well. These products can be found on ebay:

WD-40 for the sticker goo works well. Novus plastic polisher, which you can get on ebay, does a decent job on the plastic.

you've got some pretty nice cards! Don't mess around with them. Pop the $5 for a re-holder. The cards are worth it.

For those of you wanting to remove scraches to your PSA 2/SGC 30 graded T206 commons, have at it.

Steve,

Im not sure what is going on with the attitude - first, it is not always necessary to spend the money to ship cards back to sgc for a reholder. The Novus products actually work very well and do not, I repeat, do not make the slab any worse. Frankly, if you are suggesting that richard send in any nice, high grade cards for reholder, why not suggest that he first try a plastic polisher/scratch remover to see if it works? If it doesnt, sgc will still be there to take his reslab submission. If it does work, he's saved shipping x2, insurance x2 and reslabbing costs and eliminated any possibility of cards being lost during shipment (which has happened to me unfortunately - e98 cy young lost by ups enroute to sgc).
