Default 5th August Recent Pick-Up Thread

Posted By: Joe_G.

Our 5th pick-up thread of the month, I believe that's a record. Only a week to go before September, but I bet we can add a couple more August pick-ups.

As our fearless moderator dude would say . . .

If you have posted in the other pick ups thread in the last few days feel free to post here again too. Please remember to make small scans....thanks

----------------------------------------------------

Many thanks to Joe Maples who agreed to trade away this beautiful Old Judge. While I have others of equal or similar grade, none approach the "newness" of this Larry Twitchell. The front and back couldn't be more dark & clean. This is exactly what the consumer of Goodwin & Co.'s Old Judge product would see 119 years ago. Great card, thank you Joe. From one Detroit collection to another

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Hey Mike & thanks Darren.

I did find a couple cards at the National Mike. I already posted some of them, Old Judge Thompson & Getzein cards, in a previous thread. They were part of Dave Levin's Indy find.

I also added this Bennett which almost hurts the eyes but was a modest upgrade for me. The scan color is representative. Some of the 1889 cards are crazy pink/red/purple, usually at the cost of picture clarity.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Zach,

I'll have to come up with new ammo for our next crap war.

That one's pretty darn good.

For a T201 the centering is exceptional.

Zach,

Trust me, there were cards in the lot that came from that were much, much worse. Almost every card in that lot had some sort of staining similar to yours. I know the seller and looked at the cards the day he purchased them. There were about 35 T201's in the lot including a Mathewson with similar staining with the top completely torn off. I bought a T201 Evers/Chance that I though was pretty bad but without the staining yours has. Many T202's in the group with the same stains also. I purchased a T202 Mathewson/Myers with a tiny stain, a T202 Johnson/Knight that was terrible, and a decent T202 Evers/Chance. Also had a few Dockman's that were crappy as well. Bought these 5 for about $135 so actually pretty happy. Here are a few scans:

It's good to see some Old Judges in the thread for a change.

Joe G. - VERY spiffy Twitchell!

Joe M. - You added significantly to you collection in exchange and, despite the grades, they all present very nicely.

Mike - Again, grade be damned, that Sliding Billy is very attractive.

I think you all should be happy with your new acquisitions.

The Red Cobb is such a beautiful 3... has some very light staining on the back... but I could really care less with such a gorgeous front.

Sean,

Congrats... The coloring on his face looks bluish. Is that ink that had smudged or the scan?

Very little know fact that Cobb wore blue blush to intimidate the opposing pitchers. Wait it's my scanner.
