I have read somewhere that using a blacklight on the card it will tell you real or fake. What am i looking for and what other ways to find out real from fake?

It is well worth it to purchase a publication by dr cycleback entitled "Judging the Authenticity of Early Baseball Cards"

I think that it goes for $15. and you will learn enough to be 100% certain 90+% of the time. And the other ten percent, you will be more than 75% certain.

It is available on the web. You will also want to buy another item: a pocket microscope which will cost another $25.

I know - its now $40 in the hole - and you could get a real nice card for that.

That is also true. But you should buy a black light too.

Ca-Ching! now you are pushing $50. Maybe cards ain't for you. No, wait! I forgot slabs!

Yeah, with slabs you don't have to know anything!

you still need to know which slabs to buy, unless Gil knows something about NASA and PRO slabs we don't?

Its easy if you have the card in your hand. There are no reprints or homemade fakes that should ever fool someone in person. The best and easiest way to tell if its fake or not is to compare it with a known authentic card. Buy a couple low grade authentic commons for $5 and thats all you need.

The tricky part is to tell if its a fake in a picture or scan.

Actually Jay, I know very little about those graders, but to me if you can build a space shuttle, well Id trust you to grade my card. So I guess NASA must be good. And Joann says that PRO has the only UV proof holder - that sounds good, gee, that sounds like a pro organization!

Too bad neither live up to that image.

For most standard issues, if you have a beater or two from the issue you can identify almost all reprints by comparing. Thickness, gloss (back and front), holding the cards up to the light to see how much light shines through, etc. Reprints are almost always distinctly different in one or more significant ways than the originals ... It's always smart for a starting collector to pick up a collection of low grade Goudeys, T-cards, Bowmans, etc. And, when you get sick of stacking your slabs, it's great to have shoe box of beaters-- cards you can flip across the room and put on the refrigerator.
