Default Showdown: 1910 Wagner portrait vs 1952 Topps Mick

Pre-War vs. Post-War. A showdown of two titans. Which would you choose for best long-term value? Honus Wagner's 1910 W-UNC right facing color portrait? Or Mick's 1952 Topps #311? Are you fortunate enough to have or have had either of both? Post your Wagner portrait or 52 Topps Mick!

No 3rd choice, you will hypothetically inherit one of these...

Easy choice. The Mantle. Top 3 iconic sports cards of all time.

No, but if there was it should be a 14CJ Cobb.

Whichever one will sell for the most so I can buy something good. An obscure Wagner vs a double print postwar card is not a card that I want to keep long term.

But is a double print still really a double print if perhaps half were tossed into the ocean?

Mantle all the way.

Mantle with the choice offered. That Wagner image is used on many, many issues in one form or another. The Mantle is fairly unique to the 52 issue.

+1 agree neither appeal to me. Both Great players but the particular cards make it challenging.

There are still thousands of Mantles available. There are lots of better choices of Ruth, Cobb, Wagner or Joe Jackson depending on the value assigned to the two cards.

Default Showdown: 1910 Wagner portrait vs 1952 Topps Mick

The Mantle card is top 3 of all time, and vs. the 1910 W-UNC Wags Portrait, although rare and valuable, isn't a fair comparison. The W-UNC is cut from a notebook, and its rarity might render it unknown vs. the iconic Mantle to many. But for me, if we're talking 1910 Wagner Portraits, I'd take the 1910 Tip Top Wags Portrait vs. the Mantle. Thousands of Mantle's out there vs. much less than 100 pop for Wags.

Who made the strip card iconic? I don't like strip cards at all.

I’d rather have the mick than this particular wags. Id like to have a Colgans Wagner that uses a better image of the t206 over this one.

Any day, at any time, you can buy a 1952 Topps Mantle if you have the money...on the other hand, any day, at any time, you can sell a 1952 Topps Mantle if you price it right. I don't think the Wager offers either side of that equation.

That Tip Top Bread SGC 3 is a blazer! Probably $125-$150K.

Pre war vs. post war, Wagner vs. Mick, two icons, two major collecting time periods...tough to find a Wagner that's in price range of 52 Topps Mick each of similar grade.

Mantle.

I used to work with a guy who would get very frustrated with folks who didn't answer his direct questions.

In this case, he would say "The next word out of your mouth better be 'Mantle' or 'Wagner'.

Sure, but an obscure strip card vs. an altered Mantle does not a good poll make IMO.

That Wagner strip card does have fantastic color - has full borders intact....sharp looker.

In my personal opinion I believe the 52t mantle is extremely over valued for a double printed card.

Card value is not determined by supply or amount printed, demand is what determines the price. You can have a pop of 20 and only 19 people are chasing the card, prices will remain low and/or stable. Likewise, a card with a population of three or four figures with the masses chasing it in every grade will bring price escalation quite rapidly. 1952 Mantle is the ideal marketing card, heavy, heavy demand and ample supply.

Not loving the choices as one is readily available (likely 100 or more copies for sale in Chicago last week) and the other is a strip card. I'm not a huge strip card fan so I'd go with Mantle even though I don't love that card either.

I love wagners. Mickey is just an iconic card. But if collecting you can go to Nationals or any post thread and find an 52 mantle. The opposite can't be said for a UNC or Tip Top. Wagners a true collectors card. The mantles cool but not rare. you just need money to buy it. Wagners are a hunt and more of a personal collectors item.

I am a huge Wagner guy. I would take the Mantle over the W-UNC Wagner. I will leave it at that.

Pete, great Wagner. You have great taste.

And now, another Wagner, which I refer to as the Flintsone Wagner because he looks like Fred Flintstone (or Barney Rubble or some other meat head).

1910 Tip Top Authentic is rounding 3rd at REA and at $23K! Hopefully a Net54'er wins this and becomes 1 of 64 owners to secure a graded copy.

Ryan, do you know what happened to the famous Reccius Wagner that we discussed here so long ago? Anyone else?

$30K hammer price! Wagner cards are on fire. More records to be smashed on these and lower pop Wagner portraits.
