I bid on and won a complete set of 27 cards, just to obtain one card for my 1924 Senators players collection. The auction was Huggins & Scott, the set is the 1945 Centennial Flour set of Seattle Rainiers players, and the card I so badly wanted is that of submarine pitcher Byron "By" Speece: https://bid.hugginsandscott.com/bids...?itemid=220526

1924 was Speece's only year with Washington. He appeared in 21 games, all but one in relief, with a 2-1 won-loss record and a 2.65 ERA. He appeared in one 1924 World Series game, pitched one inning and gave up one run. Speece pitched for Cleveland in 1925 and 1926 and for the Phillies in 1930. He was age 27 when he piched for the 1924 Senators and age 48 when he finished his career with Seattle in 1945. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=speece001byr

What to do with the other 26 cards I don't want? Ideally, I will be able to sell them for much/most of what I paid for the set. If not, I'll keep them until age/health forces me to stop collecting.

BTW, I am told that this same set was also issued with the cards having a blue tint. So, I'm still looking for a Byron Speece with the blue tint. Can anyone help?
Congrats Val!

Chad

Default e90-3 Brown

Great score on that eBay American Beauty!

It can still pay to keep an eye on eBay, which is how I found this e90-3 Three Finger Brown, a card I have been seeking for many years. Others have been offered but I've always been blown away in the bidding. When this one popped up as an auction with a "make an offer" option, I immediately made an offer...and to my relief, joy and amazement it was accepted.

This takes me to 19 out of 20 cards for my beater e90-3 set. Dougherty was my first vintage card, purchased in the early 1990's for $10 at an antique show/flea market in St. Louis. Finishing this set would be a dream come true. The search continues for a reasonably-priced Gandil...

Default Hockey “candy”

Finally picked up a Bill Cook rookie card (actually pre-NHL rookie, but was a pro already). Only 40 total graded by PSA from the Paulins Candy set. Cook is fascinating, famous for his HOF career with the Rangers, two Cups, three first team allstars, two runners up for mvp. He started with the Rangers at 30(!) years old. He might be an alltime great if the NHL started a few years earlier. His next card appearance after this 1923 card is several in 1933.

Prewar hockey remains on fire, lots of interesting cards and printed way fewer than prewar baseball. Registry chasers have greatly pushed prices up across the board.

These aren't actually vintage, but I figured some people would like to see what I got for Christmas from the Joe Jackson Museum. It's a cool way to help support the museum. I love the pin.

One side note here is that their 1919 Black Sox set is actually a 1917 team set. It has the main players you want to see in this set, but it also has guys who weren't around in 1919

I am not a postcard collector, but heck on a stick I couldn't resist these PC792 postcards I picked up here on BST, and now have 2/3rds of the set. The tinted embossing on these is even cooler in person, and I especially like that you can see the players on the backside too (all those ridges and indents probably made it tough to write a message and address). Bonus is that these actually feature real players. Thanks Peter!

Default T210 Double Names

Couldn't resist these T210 Double Names in last night's Sterling....

Continuing to chip away at the Red Monster, which I started collecting in 1987 at the age of 8....
I'm nowhere close to finishing but love this set.

What is especially intriguing about these cards is that they are all different names on top and bottom----perhaps at some point it may be worth starting a thread with everyone's T210 Double Names to figure out the possible sheet layouts for this set,,,,
just a thought.............................
