Default Mark McGwire: I Still Would Have Hit 70 HRs Without PEDs

"Of course not all of them in the same season" continued McGwire "but over the course of 2 or 3 seasons I definitely would have hit those 70 home runs without PEDs, not a doubt in my mind."

Haha the record isn't set by hitting more than 61 home runs across 2 or 3 seasons. Why even comment at all?

I don't hate McGwire. Baseball was totally ignorant to the performance benefits of HGH, which to my understanding is not as harmful to the body as many of the steroids that were out then.

If I had an injury, I would not turn down the offer of HGH to help heal my body.

That said, it certainly was a performance enhancer for him. 6 foot 5 inch 1st Basemen don't have a history of coming back from debilitating back injuries like he suffered through for a few seasons in Oakland, bigger and stronger and more flexible then ever before.

Is there really any doubt he cheated his entire career?

My assumption is that he and Canseco started early. I have my doubts that 49 HR rookie season or whatever it was, was "natural."

Steroids weren't even banned in baseball in 1987. I don't believe the cream he admitted to using later was either, although I could be wrong about that. And even though MLB banned steroids in 91 they didn't start testing for them until 2003. Personally I don't think these guys should be black balled now when the league didn't care while this was going on.

I was just finishing McGwire's thought for him.

I don't really have anything against McGwire, but making statements like this don't really make him look good.

Guys that cheated should accept they cheated and were only able to play at the level they played at because they were cheating too. They shouldn't attempt to rewrite history decades after the fact. That's what costs them the respect of the people around them.

There's plenty of dead wrestlers that have felt more effects of HGH than steroids. I know Superstar Graham said HGH was much more harmful than steroids.

While both HGH and steroids in small doses will help you recover quicker, there's no way McGwire and Bonds took small doses.

Steroids were banned in 1971 along with any other illegal drugs or prescription drugs without a valid prescription. Some of what McGwire used weren't banned until the 2000s, but he has admitted to taking banned substances starting in 1989-1990.

That may be true, but MLB knew what was going on and chose to ignore it. It took 12 years after they "banned" steroids to even attempt to test for them. 01 was a historic season and great for ratings. They used these guys to win fans back after the strike. And now they want to keep them out of the hall. That's the part I have a problem with.

The Hall of Fame is not administered by MLB, so MLB is not keeping anyone out of it.

MLB wanted to test for steroids in the early 90s, but the player's union blocked them. It took the fans in the early 2000s wanting testing to get the union to accept it.

"Warmest Regards",

Bud Selig

I believe that his rookie season was 100% legit. He was big, but not brawny and always had the perfect uppercut Homerun swing.

I also believe that he started 'juicing' in 1995 and that, at least initially, it was just to recover from two injury-shortened seasons.

After that, of course, the totals became surreal...and, with Sosa, Palmeiro, A-Rod and Bonds help...so did the 'official' baseball record books - which I NEVER check anymore.

All Hail Mr. Roger Maris & Mr. Henry Aaron...the TRUE record holders.

I was most offended by the fact that McGwire blatantly lied to the Maris familys' faces while celebrating his temporary record.
