Does Anyone Look At The Bidder List...I.E

I have been watching closely the e107 BW Jack Chesbro on eBay and while I AM NOT questioning the seller at all, I'm wondering if anyone ever 'thinks twice' about bidding on something because something on the bidder list seems a little off.

In this case, two 'zero feedbacks' with one new to eBay as of two days ago and one from December.

Again, not questioning this seller, just using this as an example. I'm always watching who is bidding and looking for items like this and was looking to see if anyone else did the same.

Usually I look at the bidder list when dealing with several hundred or thousand dollar items. My red flags go off whenever a zero feedback bidder pushes the bids higher. I looked at the auction in question and there are two zero feedback bidders pushing the bid higher. Personally I would have concerns about shilling unless I knew the seller, and if I did know the seller I would be concerned about new bidders trying to manipulate the auction for their own amusement.

I always look at the bidder list before I bid or place a snipe. There are quite a few of the same bidders interested in the same things I collect, and some of them will pay outrageously for them so I am careful when I put my snipe in if one of them has already bid on the item. If I see two of those bidders involved in an auction I most likely won't bid. I just stick around to watch the fireworks. I don't see too many zero feedback bidders on the stuff I'm interested in though because most of the people who put the items on (fan taken photos) really have no clue as to their value.

Zero or low feedback bidders can certainly be shills, but they could also be individuals who want to keep a low profile on relatively significant purchases.

You could always contact the seller David Grimes directly: http://members.aol.com/noblegb/page/text.html. He has been a dealer for many years and is always set up at Ft. Washington.

The last thing any ebay bidder wants is attention/interest drawn to an auction they're hoping to win. Most likely outcome is a higher final bid.

As for "husband of tammy", excellent feedback and a lot sales. No shilling from that Ebayer! All I was saying is the name pops up often.

When I see the "big fish" in the group going after a card I can pretty much rest assure that I can't and won't bid. Hal - it is all yours, but it would be nice if you could leave some of the nice stuff for us small guys every now and then

Also, we should discuss the phrase "fair price" in the future. I am not sure I know what that means in this hobby these days.

Here is all you need to know in order to TRUST this seller:

He sold the FIRST of his E107 HOF cards (Flick) with a $2,500 "Buy It Now"...

and was swamped with e-mails from people telling him that he made a mistake and offering to pay him much more money if he would back out of the deal.

He did NOT.

He sold the card for the BIN price and took the loss like a stand-up guy.

I know for a fact there are several legitimate people who get new ID's simply to bid on high profile items, so people will not know they won it. Wesley did this when he won my Old Put Cobb (then he got a little excited and revealed who he was the next day, or I would not have mentioned this, as I would have kept his name confidential).

Me, I just keep my same old ID and let Quan talk about how much I overpay for Croft's Cocoa cards.

That e107 Plank I passed on a few years ago for $450 looking like a real bargin now. Would have grade 10, but looked nice. Even then I knew it was a good price, but I had just spent a bunch of money on some n36 large Indians, so I had no extra cash at the time

I had thought Lee and yourself to be the best I had seen at finding deals! Just kidding - I DEFINITELY know what it is like being out of cash when a good deal comes along. That happened to me several times last year on some Cocoas that appeared on eBay. I would have bid 3-4 times the winning bid as well, if I hadn't been broke - guess that has happened to everyone of us at one time or another.

Yeah, at this point I am pretty much just bidding on the cards because I think it is funny to see how high they will go.

It's like I am "defending the honor" of Hall of Fame rookie cards by making SURE thay anybody who wants them will NOT get them cheap.

Then, if someone outbids me... at least I have driven up the value of more HOF rookie cards (that I already own anyway).

In other words...

the Chesbro is already going to cost an arm and a leg...

so I am just having fun tossing in a few fingers and toes as well.

For what it's worth at this point, I can definitely vouch for the seller. I've met him and dealt with him a number of times. He has been a tobacco card dealer, though mainly nonsports, for many years.

I have the 2005 Price Guide at the Office but I do believe that this Chesbro 'books' at $6K in Ex-NM and $1,500 in Good condition.

(hearty laughter follows at exactly how strong this card market is now and how useless books are)

I was actually going to go as high $5K on this one and I , the idiot, thought I had a chance.

I personally have sent emails to sellers when there are bidders with negative or zero feedback. To the fact that I am not willing to bid in an auction with a negative feedback and think twice about bidding on zero feedback bidders as high bidders on auctions I do not know the seller.
