Just a reminder that my current telephone auction closes tomorrow night, March 29, at 6:00 PM for qualifying bids. There are still many good values with two bidding days to go, and I urge all to check out my website and click on the "price update" link at the bottom of the home page.

For all those participating at the end tomorrow I urge that you place your bids via telephone. We will be monitoring emails but you will be at a distinct advantage by calling. Thanks to all who have participated so far.

Regards, Barry

It was returned to the consignor. Apparently it was a proof attached to a more modern mount, and not period. My error, as it should not have been included in the sale.

CORRECTION ON AUCTION LOT #63

Last night I received a bid of $1092 on lot #63, the 1914 Cracker Jack Eddie Plank. Today the bidder called me and said he placed the bid in error. While I do not generally allow a bid retraction, I have decided to allow him in this case to retract.

So the current bid on lot #64 is $993. I apologize if this inconvenienced anyone in any way. Thank you.

Hi Barry,

You're probably up to your neck in calls and emails right now, but I thought you should know I tried calling in a bid at the following number 1-718-885-7513 (the number listed on your auction site) at 3:45 pm today and I received a recorded message that saying that the number is not a valid number in the area code. No big deal, I was only going to bid on the one item, but I hope others are not having the same problem.

Best wishes,

Joe

Sparky- you need to put your full name by your post, if you are not well known, then you may speak your mind...good, bad, indifferent....but when offering criticism, or strong opinions, you need to adhere to the board rules...thanks.....leon

First off- Sparky, whoever you are, please identify yourself. I do not respond to anonymous attacks. I don't recall soliciting your opinion. Besides, you sound like a loser, so why should I care?

I will be working on invoices this morning, and will post final bids on the website this afternoon. Thanks to all who participated, it was a great success.

Hey "Sparky",

I actually enjoy the "old-style" auction that Barry runs...at the very least I can ask questions about lots (and get immediate answers)and have the opportunity to chit-chat with Barry in the process. Nice cowardly post...if you an issue with Barry or his auction give him a call. Keep it off of the forum.

Barry:

Will the prices you post INCLUDE the 15% buyer's premium or not?

Those of us who try to use auction prices to determine current market values need to know one way or the other.

Thanks!!

Barry, thanks for posting your prices realized. I like to keep track of the current prices on cards.

A question about the N28 Clarkson. How did you arrived at the rookie designation? Wasn 't his Old Judg card clearly issued before this one? I am not trying to nitpick, I just want to know if I am overlooking something.

Thanks to all for the kind words. Some of the prices were great, but for those who did their homework there were some good deals too.

Harry- both the Old Judge and N28 were issued in 1887...not sure which was first. Fair point.

James- not trying to be antagonistic, but that Sparky character just sounded like one of the barnacles of life, someone who is just bitter and frustrated and takes it out on others. What part did you find compelling? Since you posted your name, happy to field any questions

I believe Hal Lewis proved that n28s were issued in 1888. Your n28 John Clarkson card is good proof of that since it pictures Clarkson in a Boston uniform and Clarkson played for Chicago for the entire 1887 season. And Harry's correct that there is an 1887 n172 Clarkson depicting him on the White Sox.

Barry--I respect your option to run your auction in any way you please. In this era of fast-paced technology, and even more impatient people, I can imagine that bidders not having instant access to information or communication must be frustrating to them. The days of the phone bid seem archaic, even though it is nostalgic to so many. Your prices realized are steller, however, I personally prefer to deal with online auction houses with the 30 minute rule on each lot. That way I know how I stand on each time, how much time is left, and I can budget as such. Just my thought and I'm glad you're happy with how it went.

James

Congrats Barry!!! Those prices are amazing. Somehow your format must appeal to the high-end (wealthy) collector. I actually appreciate different auction formats. My feelings are that if a bidder wants to know where an item is at...call him. He's the one that has to exert the manpower to answer the phone. The phone call costs me about as much time as clicking around on the internet.

Barry, I hope you decide to have auctions on a more regular basis. Quarterly??

Absolutely. However, the internet does provide more flexibility and those problems we encountered that night have been fixed. Every form of communication medium has those problems. I just feel the only way phone auctions can provide what most customers are looking for is if there is a call back service. In no way am I impuning Barry's auction, it's just my opinion.

When agonizing about whether or not to make one more bid I suppose it's a little consolation to see the lots going for way more than what I wanted to bid. Congratulations, Barry, on a great auction with some great cards!!

Hardly checkmate John. Our customers and consignors were almost universally satisfied with how we handled ourselves during that time. Jerry was trying to be snappy where a problem existed for less than a day. Sparky remarked that phone systems are archaic and don't allow for instant communication. He also mentioned that Lew Lipset even runs an internet auction. While his tone was nasty, the point was taken. I personally think Barry is a credit to the hobby, and how he wants to run his auctions are fine by me. From my own collecting viewpoint though, telephone auctions just don't allow me the flexibility.
