Who wants to identify these?

Since Leon was just able to identify one of my unknown issues as being a Baseball Bats Mathewson (see Unfortunate incident thread), I figured I'd see if I can get anyone to confirm my suspicions or identify any of these other "mystery" cards:

1) M116 Ad Poster cut-outs?

The Collins on the left and the Wagner both are blank backed, on a heavier stock, and have a more greenish tint to them than a standard blue background M116 (center Collins). I have always assumed they were cut from a poster. Can anyone confirm if such a poster existed, or if these came from some other source?





2) 1910 E-UNC Candy Eddie Collins?

I'm assuming this card is from the E-UNC Candy set listed on page 137 of the 2004 Standard Catalog?





3) Babe Ruth cutout?

I have no notions of this card being from a regular set or worth much of anything, but if anyone can identify what it was cut from, I'd love to know.





4) 1910's-1920's Unknown Caramel Type Sets

The Johnson and Magee (neither mine) and Lajoie represent two sets from what appears to be the 1910-1916 Era. I've seen other cards from the set with the Johnson and Magee, but not the Lajoie set. The Lajoie almost looks like a Sporting News but the pose is wrong and there is no number.







Some of these I hope have been identified in the past couple of years. Anyone know?

at the bottom is presented in the Oct. 17 SCD, the impetus being the sale of a Joe Jax from the set in an Hunt auction. We've received confirmation of two others from the set, and Keith Olbermann has indicated he will send copies of a few he has. We date in 1915 and will catalog it as a W-UNC in the 2005 book. I think you're right about the Eddie Collins being from 1910 E-UNC.

Brett- recently I purchased a blank back McQuillan Cinn. (one of the 2 rarest cards in the set). It was listed as being a proof but it is not, just as I believe that your Collins and Wagners are not either, merely blank backs. I keep hearing that supposedly there was an ad sheet which contained M116s, but I do not think there is any proof to substantiate this. I am at a loss to explain why the McQuillan variation would pop up on an ad sheet since it was obviously produced very late in the series, he and 1 other card being team changes, thus accounting for their rarity. I guess perhaps Lipset might know the answer to that one. As far as proofs go, I bought a black and white blank backed M116 Mitchell the other day and I DO believe this one is a proof. I have never seen one before and when it comes back from GAI, I'll put the scan on the board.

Why do people always refer to this as Eddie Collins, when clearly it is Jimmy Collins?

The pose is identical to the Collins from E93 Standard Caramel, generally accepted as a 1910 issue. Jimmy Collins last played for the A's (and in the Major Leagues) in 1908, which was also the first year Eddie Collins played in over 100 games for the A's.

In all likelihood this is one of those cases where the manufacturers wanted to put in a card of Eddie Collins, as he was the emerging star (21 in 1908) and not the decrepit old man (38 in 1908), but used their standard image of the latter.

Just my opinion.

I don't have in front of me, does E93 have a first name on the back checklist?

Brett, Your Collins card is catalogued on page 134 of the 2003 standard catalog book by Lemeke, it is a 1910 E-UNC candy box card with the base paths cut away. I own the Walter Johnson and that is an uncatalogued strip issue. Please lmk if either is for sale. thanks Dan.

I think it's Eddie Collins for 2 reasons.

The name at the bottom starts with an "E" as does Eddie. I think.

Also, I went to the HOF web site to check their photos

The card looks quite a bit like Eddie not at all like Jimmy. BTW, there are some pretty nice photos of all the HOF greats.

The question on Eddie vs. Jimmy is on the E-UNC Candy card, not the M116's.

The M116's are definitely Eddie.

I also bought an M116 card that was blank-backed in recent months. Crappy condition and handcut borders, and missing some colors. Printer's scrap, I figure. Still, quite interesting to have.

Does GAI grade/authenticate stuff like that?
