Default Very Rare 1904 Buffalo Team Photo (Eastern Lge)

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

Well, we all know that in 1904 the NY Giants refused to play the Boston (A.L.) team. McGraw & Brush (Giants) and Pulliam (NL Pres.) expected the Highlanders (Yankees) to win the A.L. championship. When Boston beat the Highlanders on the last day of the season in a dramatic playoff game, the above officials of the NY Giants considered Boston to be an "inferior" team, not worthy of competing with the Giants. So the Giants declared themselves World Champions and the season came too a sudden end.

Meanwhile, in 1904 in the Eastern (future International) Lge. the Buffalo
team surprised all the experts and won the Championship. Under
Stallings strong leadership, perhaps it wasn't such a big surprise.
So, here they are! You will recognize quite a few players that
were subsequently in the T206 set.

Can anyone tell me if this team photo has an ACC designation?

Ted, I wasn't aware that you owned the item (still not sure), and figured you just posted a pic off the web or something.

If it is the team photo of reasonable size (size directly relates to vaue of a photo), it's got good value. I tried in vain to read that line of text at the bottom, but know that the famous baseball photographer Carl Horner made early 1900s international league baseball photos in similar composite designs. If it's an original photo and says Carl Horner somewhere, it's worth real money. Horner's photos typically have a cardboard backing, making them card-like.

Also, other than maybe some crappo home comuter reprints or glossy 8x10s, I've not seen Horner's photos reprinted or faked. In particular, many of his team and large group photos are unusually large (larger than 8x10), meaning it would be most difficult to reprint them at genuine size ... There's a reason why most eBay counterfeiters offer T206s and 51 Bowman Mantles-- you can print several of those babies per page. If the largest your printer can print is 8x11", or even 11x14", you'll have a tough time trying to reprint a 20x20" Carl Horner photo at original size. And it's unlikely one of those eBay counterfeiters would even try, as they want easy money not challenges.

DAVIDCYCLEBACK

This sepia toned photo is exactly 4" x 5 1/16" and is mounted
on a 7" x 8 5/8" grayish brown turn-of-the century type photo-
cardboard, The fine printing at the bottom center is "Copyright 1904
by H. C. Weasner, Buffalo, NY". In the lowermost right corner is
"Photos by Weasner 244 Genesee St."

Obviously, I computer enlarged this photo, so I could provide
a clear and legible depiction.

I acquired this piece up in Cooperstown, NY 12 years ago; from a
an upstate NY collector. It is my understanding that it is a true
original team photo. I have a 1905 Spalding Guide whose information
on the 1904 Eastern League confirms the players portrayed in this photo.

I've already been offered "big bucks" for it; however
I am a true collector and intend to keep it for a while longer.
But, you have aroused my curiosity.....what value do you place
on it ?

I remember S&H green stamps and Gold Bond stamps. Were there any others?

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Gary N.

At this point I am not interested in selling this team photo.

The 1904 BB season has always fascinated me, and this item is
a real nice part of that season's history.
But, I am interested in finding out more about it.

Adam:

Stallings has a card in the 1913 National Game issue.

Jay:

We used to have something called Plaid Stamps in New Jersey that were similar to S & H and Gold Bond.

Kevin

I used to live in NYC as a kid and I remember those. My mom once accidentally dropped her books down the incinerator shaft in the apartment building and from the way she ran down the super to rescue them you'd have thought she'd dropped one of us kids down there.

I also remember sitting around those &&&tty redemption centers for hours (or so it seemed) waiting for whatever piece of junk my mom was getting for her stamps.

Incidentally, I took Civil Procedure from a law professor whose big landmark case was the antitrust suit that broke the back of one of the trading stamp companies back in the 1970s.

The above post provides a list of available George Stallings cards;
that is if you are still interested.

Look, I've had some serious offers for this photo from several vintage
memorabilia collectors. The best $$ offer consists of a McKinley and
4 - Ben Franklins.....you do the math.

So, just hold onto your $10 and your Green (or Plaid, or whatever)
stamps for now; however, thanks for the "laugh".
