Default Great Pre-WWII baseball cards

This F52 Froy Joy Ruth Portrait isn't that great but at least it is a pre-wwII baseball card and we can talk about it. And that is more than I can say for a lot of threads on the front page recently. Sure would be nice to see some more card related threads. The show threads and others are great but I always like the card threads a lot..

I am sure this was shown before but it was a gladly accepted boomerang from submitting my collection to SGC when I sold it. They don't grade these. I wish they would except for this one instance(since I got to keep it). Btw, these are a great alternative to other period Ruth cards and can be had for a fraction of many others.

Default Love that Fro Joy

Love that card Leon. Not a lot of real Babe portraits out there... maybe the Maple Crispette is the one with him the youngest. SGC should figure out how to grade them especially if they are doing his Candy cards again... here's my Maple and a tough Ruth Candy I own.

A great Ruth card that doesn't quite garner the respect it deserves is the 1933 Sport Kings. Great pose and artistry, and can go for a reasonable Ruthian amount.

These are my favorite poses of the Fro-joy and Ruth Candy cards. Leon, I assume Beckett still grades the Fro-joys.

Good info to know. I sold a couple a Babes several years ago. In the future when my financial dust settles I hope to pick up a few different cards to keep me company. I don't imagine the prices on some of these will be all that much higher at that point...but who knows?

Note to Brian: That's one of the "reasonable" cards I sold. I received a reasonable amount.

Leon, what is the reason SGC won't grade those? I believe I've read before it's because they were receiving lots of fakes, but I could be totally mistaken about that.

Gotta shout out the man Ruth looked up to in the hitting department...

And here's one other hitter so slept-on. His 1932 and 1938 seasons boggle the mind. Plus such a pleasing image.

as a kid in the early to mid 80's starting to watch baseball - i never got to see some of the old time greats and the greatest ever ruth. frojoy1.jpg

But im very thankful i did get to see the greatest even in other sports

Gretzky & Jordan

Football is a tougher call but with Manning and many other QB's, other positions with jerry Rice etc and Defenders like LT i got to see plenty

Looks like that 2nd group of cards was on a key chain, hole punched then eventually worn away and or torn off

One of the great stories about Fro Joys, except the bogus ones, is when the photographer asked Ruth to remove his chewing gum for the portrait shot and the Babe obligingly parked the wad on the top of his cap, as can be seen in the photo.

Some fantastic cardboard in this thread.

I gotta agree with Pete, the CJ Big Train is a special card.

One each of the first 5.
