Default Hypothetical T206 Question

This Black Swamp find has me thinking, let's say T206 Wagner wasn't rare, same as all the others production wise. And Plank is the big boy of the set. Do you think Plank value would be drastically higher? What would Wagner value be at Cobb, Mathewson, Young levels? Higher/Lower. Any thoughts.... Just curious Thx Ralph

The answer is to look at how Wagner compares in caramel sets to Cobb and Matty, and then apply a discount for the bump in fame Wagner recieved just for having the iconic T206 card.

Plank value slightly higher, not drastically; and Wagner value less than it is, but more than the big stars, if a bunch were suddenly found and put on the market.

A component of the drive of the Wagner card is the hype and lore. If 800 of them were found, and sold, the card value would decrease, but the hype and lore would keep it higher than cards available in similar quantities.

It's just what I think... like you said.

I think if Wagner did not refuse to be a part of T206, and had similar production numbers from the beginning as the other stars, then he would probably be similar in value to say a Green Cobb. There are some sets where Wagner has greater value than Cobb and others where he has less (e.g., Cracker Jack). So, I would guess he would be roughly the same as Cobb in this set. However, he would only have one pose, as opposed to multiple poses for the other stars, so I think that would raise the value of this card somewhat.

I think Plank would have higher values to what he has now, but not at Wagner level if Wagner were no longer the "big dog." Even though Plank was a HOFer, he wasn't a huge star like Wagner. However, since the Magie is relatively affordable, the Plank would then be THE card that would cause most collectors to not be able to complete the set, well, that and the Doyle, which would still be impossible for everyone.

glchen,

You argue that Wagner would be valued higher than other cards because he would only have one pose. But what you are saying might NOT have been true if Wagner would have allowed himself to be in the T206 set.

Think about it. There is only one pose because Wagner didn't want to be in the set and his card was pulled. Now, who is to say there wouldn't have been more poses if Wagner didn't object to being in the set?

If wagner wasn't pulled from production you could argue the popularity of the t206 would be drastically different. He's the chase card and the reason why so many non-collectors at least have an idea about the t206 set.

It could even be more drastic.

The Wagner has sort of a perfect storm of aspects that make a great collectible.
Great player or subject
great story
rare enough to be very hard to find, but not so rare that it's impossible. While that varies from hobby to hobby it seems to settle in around 50-100 of something in mainstream hobbies, much lower for others.

Plank is rare enough and great enough, but doesn't have the story.
The Doyle is too rare and hasn't got much else going for it.

Without the Wagner T206 being what it is our entire hobby could be very different.
