Default T206 Proofs

Posted By: Ben

From what I've taken in from reading the articles on t206museum.com, there was a very substantial "find" in New York many years ago that included a large group of t206 and t3 proofs. This find included a well-known proof of an uncatalogued Eddie Collins card, which was purchased and later sold by Charlie Sheen (25k doesnt sound quite as astronomical a sum as it did 5 years ago, does it?)

I've also heard that several other proofs of uncatalogued southern leaguers have turned up as well - has anyone on the forum seen or handled any of these? I'm lucky enough to own a t206 proof of Mattern, a catalogued pose (scan below). Anyone else have any t206 proof scans/experiences to share? Could serve for some interesting discussion.

Ben- I take it the proof of Mattern escaped the burglar? Keith Olbermann bought a group of 8 (I believe) uncatalogued proofs from the T206 set, all Southern Leaguers. It has led to speculation that perhaps there is a Joe Jackson T206 proof out there somewhere, although I frankly doubt it, but you never know.

Yes, by a real stroke of luck the Mattern managed to escape the robbery. I originally acquired the card about 3 years ago, sold it maybe 6 months after. I had always regretted the decision to sell it, so when it turned up in the hands of a fellow board member, we managed to work out a deal so that I could get it back. This was only a few months ago. It just so happened that the proof was sitting in my mailbox that very week my apartment was broken into, and therefore managed to escape. Silver lining, I guess you could call it.

I've heard the joe jackson proof rumor as well...sounds more like a fantasy to me (a very pleasant one to be sure).

Ben.
There's an interesting article on t206 proofs in vcbc #9 written by Olbermann.
Besideds the slers and the collins, he mentions:

schulte cubs (proof chicago)
brown (proof gray collar instead of blue)
kling (proof gray collar instead of blue)
bowerman (proof white collar)
oldring (white cap)
CY YOUNG! (portrait proof with a white shirt??)
among others.
I'd love to see some of these in color.

The T206 unique proofs of Bowerman, M. Brown, Kling, and Young (portrait) are all with the Honus Wagner card in the famous 5-card strip.
That is the only copy of these unique proofs that I have seen.
