Default Mantle variation?

Hi Guys:

Have you seen lot # 1323 in the latest REA auction?

https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=47234

Shows the rarer 62 Auravision record with the back showing 63 stats that are on the back of the easier 64 pose. The small photo on the back is also different from the one on the back of 62 version.

Seems to be a hybrid between the two versions. Cool in my eyes.

Nothing to see there ... just move along. Move along.

I also think it is pretty cool. It does appear to be a hybrid between the two versions. However, the small photo on the back seems to be the same as on my '62 version, just slightly different cropping.

Sorry I misspoke on the small photo on the back. DIFFERENT cropping is a better description. I THINK it is same cropping as on the 64 version. Is that correct?

The write-up says "The record features a paper overlay on the reverse displaying Mantle's statistics through the 1963 season." This suggests that it isn't so much a variation as it is a glued together mash up.

I think the cropping is different from both of the "regular" issues. This one has more sky between Mickey's hat and the top of the photo plus it shows more stripes on his left shoulder. As for the regular issues, the '64 seems to be a little more close-up than the '62.

I think it's more of a mock-up to show how the '64 issues will look. They then decided to change the picture on the front. Providing it's an authentic Sports Champions mock-up of course.

I've heard about this "variation" before but never seen a picture before. Not sure I'd consider it a variation, but it is an interesting piece.

Nice 60 Venezuelan Mike

Looking at the rest of the lot, there is a similar Spahn as well as a Spahn with a blank back "sticker".

They all appear to me to be professionally done. Must have come out of the company files. Love that kind of stuff.

I went to the Xograph office in NYC while in college back in the early 70's. I was doing a research paper and asked and got some of the Topps 3-D's from their files. Wish I still had them!!

...and regarding the rest of the cards in the submission , were you also surprised by those grades ? I've been told that at least "three sets of eyes look at the final graded product before a card is registered and shipped ?.....

From one extreme to the other.

When I see grades like this, I often wonder, (as I would) if you thought, damn, I should have sent more in?

Nice card, BTW.

Default mantle

Only card submitted. Over the years I have submitted many cards that I thought were 8s only to get a 6. So I guess it all evens out in the end. I recently submitted a 1951 Bowman Ford that was a sgc 55 to BVG because I thought it was a sure fire 5.5 and Beckett is easy right? Came back as altered although I personally doubt it.

I am not anti-grading, just realistic about its limitations. Mistakes, judgment calls, etc. are all part of it. PSAs Mona Lisa is the Gretzky Wagner and it is pretty obvious the screwed that up.

The stamp panel split in half...graded by psa is ridiculous
Whats more ridiculous is the current bid

Default Mantle Comic Book?

This isn't a pick up yet, but I was hoping someone here could tell me about this and it's potential value? There may be a whole case of them?

These are available in an Estate Sale I am going to tomorrow morning. I am posting a different thread on the sale and other items in it, so you may see this twice.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Chris, the picture contains issue one and two of the magazine. They were released in 1991 and 1992. It looks like you can pick them up for less than five dollars shipped from eBay--there is one at .99 with free shipping right now.

1962 with a 1964 overlay. Don't pull up my prior quotes please about how I was getting this one. Recently popped up on eBay, the price was right, and I was anxious to see it in person and examine it.

I wouldn't. They are great in strip form. And there are plenty of individual ones graded already.

Thanks. I also picked up Ford and Feller a few years ago. I'll get the Mantle framed just like those.

Hey, Mr. McSnipe! I thought I had that at an even lower price. At least I'm glad it went to someone I know will appreciate it.

I wouldn't. Like Chris said, keep them in strip form. I think they're much rarer that way.

Also, and more importantly, unless it's just a bad photo, I'd say you won't get a very high grade for the cut out Mantle. He's missing the top of his head/hat.

Haha, I think there were two that went up for auction recently? This one and the one that came from that lot and that I believe was resold? I was actually ahead the whole time with this one. Only one other bidder who tried at the last minute with a ~$108 bid. I am glad to own it.

I inspected it in person. I believe it was done by the factory as the bank cover sheet appears to have been professionally mounted on. There isn't a single bubble or anything to suggest it was attached as an afterthought. In a stupid rookie move, I took it out of the toploader it was in while I was walking and inadvertently bumped a wall with it, putting a one centimeter gash in it. It's very frustrating but it doesn't look all that bad, and, surprisingly, despite going through both the record and the attached back, it did not cause the back to separate at all. So I learned from it at least. Still annoyed but it will be secure moving forward.

Mike, the one i have was owned by Bill Wilen. He emailed me and said the photo came with an autographed letter back from Mantle in 1958 when he wrote to Mantle asking for an autographed photo. It is clearly just a print on the photo but still cool. He said he has the letter framed in his den
As to the size difference... i have no idea what that is about. The photo image is 7 -1/2" x 9- 1/2" which looks to be the same or similar to yours, so it could have been handout smaller i guess? Also, yours looks much cleaner, almost white, compared to the beige stock example i have.

You're right, I was actually the one who bid kind of late. Early onset of "Old-Timer's Disease"?

I was thinking this was the same one that sold in the recent auction and that the winner was turning around and selling it off. However, I just checked to see if any of the others in the auction group were also listed on eBay and didn't see them in completed listings. So, maybe there are two of them out there.

Very sorry to hear about the gash. I know how sickening that is.

Yours has a nice provenance to it. Mine simply came from some seller on eBay.

The photo image on mine is the exact same size as yours: 7-1/2" by 9-1/2". Mine is actually on a kind of beige stock and not white. I think that's an artifice of the camera. I should scan it to see if it scans more "life like." I took it out of its sheet protector, being careful not to walk around near any walls with it (wink, wink Chris), and found that the paper stock is not a slick photographic stock, but more of a thick, rough paper stock with an almost cardboard feel to it, but not nearly thick enough to be cardboard.

1951 Bowman followed by 1952 Topps. Just like in real life, his rookie card followed by a second year card. Sweet stuff for breakfast. Great pick-ups gents!
