I know this is a postwar card, but figured this would be the proper forum

Splendid looking card....the l/r centering must be right at the 65/35 threshold needed for a 9.

I think it was 20.

Quite the pull! And pretty cool that they got the "2018 National Break" notated on the flip.

Andy, thanks for uploading a scan.

Wow, 20 slots at $500 a slot.

The PSA pop for a MINT 9 1955 Bowman Mickey Mantle is now just 8 or 9; furthermore PSA stated in the article that they hadn't graded one as MINT for 20 years! That's a meager number of graded mint specimens, and probably the provenance on this particular one will give it higher cache. For sure, this Mantle can genuinely be described as "pack-fresh", and with it being immediately graded, that gives it further allure.

Great story from the National, that's for sure.

I saw that it has a rough cut on top and wondered where it was in the sheet. Here's one Huggin's and Scott sold at auction.

What an awesome pull. Especially from a group break. I probably would have accepted that 50k offer.

What did they do with the stick of gum in the pack? Sorry, couldn't help wondering.

No gum; no wax stains. At least for $500 each, the entrants got clean cards. Rovell, who wrote the ESPN article, had a slot in the break.
I count 27 pixels on the left side, 19 pixels on the right side. That equates to 59/41, so yeah, I don't think it should have gotten a 9. Straight 8, yes.

Do you think PSA got caught up in the moment or do you think they thought this would be great advertising being at the National and all?

I'm guessing they got caught up in the moment.

Both.

Because certainly this card wouldn't be over scrutinized as nobody wanted to know what it was going to grade. A 9 can be 60/40 and the eye appeal looks pretty sharp to me

Default 55 bowman 9

Maybe they should have introduced the first 10 (OC)

I stand corrected. Based on the comments above, I assumed 60/40 was too off center to warrant a grade of 9 but checking PSA's website, I see that is not the case.

I've never seen what grade the Ernie Banks got?

I had seen comments that the Banks had a lower high-grade population than the Mantle, but never saw what the Banks received.

The Johnny Podres card rated a 9 as well, according to Joe Orlando's Twitter feed. He said all the cards scored between PSA 5 and 9. Not sure what the Banks got.
