I recently attended a SABR meeting in Little Rock, AR where Sal Maglie's son Mike spoke to the group.

I was surprised to hear that the origin of the nickname "The Barber" did not come from his "close shave" pitches. Mike Maglie told us that one day a reporter asked Leo Durocher which player in the locker room was Sal and his response was "he's the guy that looks like the barber behind the third chair."

Certainly not as colorful as the guy that who threw inside when needed??????

How funny! No, Sal "The Barber" has definitely lost some of its sex appeal as a macho nickname. I suppose it's better than Sal "The Pedicurist", but not by much...

I don't even know how I find these things.
It helps to collect a theme I suppose....
