Seated left is Dummy Hoy (in his last year before the majors). Seated in the center of the photo (up, down and sideways) is Frank G. Selee, in HIS last year before the majors, and seated to Frank's left is Tommy McCarthy, who has been kicking around the HOF since 1946.

Any other questions?

Selee is the great HOF manager (never played pro ball), who led the beaneaters to so many titles in the 1890s, and whose face is rarely seen anywhere...

And I didn't just bid 3272.00 on it, either!

Nice pick up Julie. Didn't know that was you. Is that actually HOF Tommy McCarthy or another by the same name? I know he had been playing some in the majors since 1884 so I figured it was a different McCarthy.

Whether the Oshkosh stint occurred before or after these, I don't know. Since Oshkosh won the "pennant"
that year, probably before.

If it turns out not to be him,. I'm pretty happy with William Ellswo0rth Hoy and frank G. Selee.

He played sparingly in 1884, 85, 86 & 87 in the majors. Since he only played 18 games for Philly that year he very well could have been playing with Oshkosh.

BTW, I never looked closely at McCarthy's career stats. As I got looking at his career numbers it made me wonder...who were the drinkers on the 1946 HOF comittee? McCarthy's numbers aren't even remotely close to HOF numbers. It wasn't his managing either. Was he an executive?

Seller offered, at the same time "Oshkosh Baseball," with this photo printed on auction page, identifying players uder their names.

Here's the back of the photo I won.

A question is whether Julie's photo is a record for the most expensive sports photo from Wisconsin?

Until JC started bidding, I thought I might get a steal, too. But I knew he must have seen all three of the guys, because he isn't stupid. I NEVER planned on bidding less than I won it for, however (and even thought--if I win it for $150, should I offer seller more money? Was advised not to).
1) Thanks to Martin Daziel, who brought it to my attention, and
2) Does anyone else have a have or photo of Frank Selee?HOF 1998 or 9?

I take it that most of you think I got robbed. So I guess that means none of you would want to buy it if I should sell it? Hmm?

I've been looking at the "Oshkosh Baseball" book--from which an--unfortunately--much clearer picture was posted on that book's auction page, and it seems to me the photo is--Cabinet size (4x6) or a little larger. So it will look a lot better than the picture I posted.

There's also a list, on a poted page of the book, which gives Tommy's middle initial, and lists him as one of the great players "developed" by Oshkosh (book was puiblished in 1913). So I'm pretty sure it's him.

But then: It IS a photo...John, I know you were probably just joking--but you wouldn't have beat ME if you'd bid 6K, so it wouldn't have done any good to beat JC...

I don't own the scorecard, just saved the image. I've seen a few of them over the years.

This is a shameless plug but $3000 may get you an 1871 Osceola Base Ball Club of Stratford (Champions of Connecticut)Mammoth sized cabinet (5 sizes larger than an imperial cabinet if I am interpreting Divid's/Cycleback's info correctly). The size and feel of this massive cabinet is really nice. The best part of it is that it includes future Hall of Famer James "Orator" O'Rourke (far right) prior to his professional début

This size of albumen cabinet is extremely rare and was very expensive to make. It was possibly made especially for the club and hung in their clubhouse.

http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/site/bid/bidplace.asp?itemid=2215&getauctionid=10

It starts at $1500 but there are no bids on it yet and I am getting a little nervous. I didn't really want to sell it and hope that I am not going to have to part with it at a giveaway price!

I saw that one. It is hard for me to store large PICS like that one. PLus, I think the REA starting prices should be lowered to get more interested people on lots. I know that, the only thing I look at on final night, is the lots I bid on during the beginning. I do not go back and see what has not opened. If something is not opened after 1 week I think that something is up with that lot and I don't want to find out the hard way. I love lots that have 10 bids on them where I feel like the item is in "Play". I'm sure you will do fine on your item when the right two bidders go for it! JC

over a little Japanese airplane with a Russian pitcher in it. For several hours, he'd wait till the last minute to bid, and then I would immediately top his bid.

Then it reminded me of something. I sent him an email, saying "Star Trek:
"it moves as we move."

Whereupon he bid three times in quick succession, with me shadowing his bids with mine.

I won. For a RIDICULOUS amount!

Jason, I can't bid until I get my catalog with bidder number, and I suspect others are waiting simularly. I think many bidders in other auctions also wait until they receive their catalog, before getting serious. At the least, the four pound catalog on the doorstep is physical reminder that there's an auction going on.

Jason, for your benefit, I will back up that the photo you linked is a nice and rare one, and that the extra large size old photos were commonly made for VIPs, like the team owner, player or for public display in the local town hall.

Even with modern photographs, the supersized photos are commonly referred to as 'display' or 'exhibition' photos and were expensive to make. Even if a collector doesn't know why the photo was made, a super large photo was made to be displayed prominently somewhere.

*** One exception (not applying to Jason's photo, as his is obvously a display/exhibit type photo), is that some monster sized 1800s baseball photos were the photographer's proofs, or original art, used to make smaller cabinets and cdvs. In fact, curtousy of its owner, the proof/original art to the 1880s Iowa team cabinet is on my site somewhere (I'm not being coy, I'm not sure where it is).
