Default B & L Pick-Ups

Now that it's over (or at least rumor has it that it is over), how did everyone do last night?

I was only after one item, the Clarke brothers cabinet card but, as usual, my item more than tripled in price during the extended bidding from $733 to $2,500+ and ended up being out of my price range in the end.

Got the 1910 Ty Cobb Notebook Cover, Lot #8. Have a Wagner of the same series, and I love this image of Cobb.

I just don't like the policy of anybody being able to bid in extended bidding on an item, whether they have a prior bid down before closing regular bidding or not. Not just sour grapes because I lost but I prefer having to only outbid guys with a bid down. I know it's better for the consignors and the auction house but it just makes it harder to determine which cards to pursue when you have no clue how many other bidders you are facing on a particular item.
That said, congratulations Scott and Leon for a well run and good auction, as always.

Bob-Is this format really better for consignors? The strategy for bidding in an auction like this should be to not bid until 3 or 4AM on the last day if you really want an item. There is NO REASON to bid before then. With this strategy many people have gone to bed and some of the bidding wars that might normally arise don't take place because sane people are sleeping by then. I think the best way to improve realizations in this auction is to have some better lot descriptions. Most descriptions in the auction are no more than here it is, bid on it. I wouldn't expect REA descriptions, but would expect Ebay like descriptions.

Managed one win (Hockey). Was outbid on one lot at 2:01:03am. The rules are what they are but I would like to see bidders at least have to bid on one lot before OT to qualify for other lots (like Sterling).

Was the underbidder on the small 1910 Wunc group but did manage to win a large group of 75 w572s. Been kind of wanting to work on a black and white photo set and it seems I always lose patience with the t209-2s...heh...

Default Nice auction

I also got my first Cobb, the E210. I'm excited, it looks like a nice card. I think overall the auction got strong prices on most of the items.

I did place bids on a couple of other auctions earlier in the day, but they were quickly erased by higher bidders. I agree that bidding early doesn't really make much sense. Around 11.00 pm I went through the auction and there were still ten auctions that I was willing to bid up, but like tbob posted I didn't feel comfortable bidding on all of them. I decided to focus on the item that I felt I would be mostly likely to win and fortunately the bid was high enough. I suppose if my bid was not high enough and the auctions were staggered I might have bid other items.

It has to be real tough, if not impossible, to run an auction where everybody is happy. Congratulations to Leon & Scott for running another great auction.

Best regards,

Joe

I won the single card I really wanted, the D381 Rodgers, despite the efforts of some night owl who kept bumping me.

I had a lot of consignments and was happy with most of the results. By the way, if anyone wants to know what set has soft prices, I'll nominate '15 CJ's. Nowhere near their peaks of a few years ago.

Congrats to Leon & Scott for another successful auction. And, BTW, I have no problem with their "open-ended" bidding method.

I am thrilled to have won Lot #238, the blue Sweet Caporal PX7 Domino Disc of WaJo, which is the only color of the WaJo PX7 that I didn't already have.

This was my first non-ebay auction, so I tried not to go crazy. I was in about 5 lots till the end when I went to bed. I wound up winning the E95 Evers, my first caramel card, which presents beautifully for a 1. And I'm a Cubs fan, so kinda cool.
Also won the '49 Bowman Scheffing PSA 8. Not prewar, but I've always thought that was a cool looking set. Just started working on it. So this is a good way to start. I'm guessing I won't get too many more 8's on my budget. Not if I want to stay married.
Thanks for a great auction, Leon and Scott.

I managed to get 3 single card lots, including the E95s of Crawford and Bender (which I felt were nice values).

In general, I thought the prices were strong. I was bidding on the E106 Speaker, but it went about 30% higher than my price point (and what the exact card sold for a couple years ago). Likewise a few other cards I tracked sold for quite a bit more than the exact card sold for in the last couple years.

Having said that, there were a few bargains too.

As for the fomat of the auction...I like it. The lots that got my primary attention, I got outbid on. So I was able to move to other lots in O/T...ones I did not pay close attention to earlier. Better for the consignors and the auction house to have someone increase the price realized on other lots, rather than walking away from the auction with money to spend and no options open for bidding.

Though I can understand that a post 5:30AM EST ending is a bit much for some bidders in the East...

Default Koester vs W575-1

Now that I got around to reading some older threads on the Koester cards, how can I be sure that this is a Koester card vs a w575-1? If SGC, as an authenticatrion expert, was confident enough to call it a Koester, then I would think there is some difference when compared to the w575, although past posts appear to indicate otherwise. I'd appreciate thoughts on this. Thanks, Ron

I'm curious to know this also. I cracked out an SGC W575-1 Ruth, and sent it into PSA, and they wouldn't holder it due to fragility, but called it a W575-1. I tried it again, and again, PSA would not holder, but this time called it a Koester.

Ronnie & Gary, the Koesters vs W575-1 debate is very complicated but it can be taken on a case by case basis depending on the subject. According to my research the McGraw card is easily identified as a Koesters if it is the "Standing pose" (not the later portrait) with the position on bottom being "Mgr." as opposed to "Manager" on front. The change of designation was done for the Koesters promotion...thus, with the McGraw as long as it is the standing pose and has "Mgr." on front it is a Koesters...

Here is my copy...

Hope this helps,
-Rhett

Default W575-1 vs Koester

Here's my W575-1 Ruth (pre-crackout) that I picked up from collectauctions. Note that SGC got the flip wrong (Babe vs George Ruth).

For the topic at hand, I picked up 3 lots (Harrington Gehrig, W514 lot, Overland Candy lot) from B&L thanks to the auction format and being on the West Coast. I was basically planning on sitting this one out, but I logged in late Saturday night, and these lots were just too tempting. The ending of the auction went very late. I was worried that it would be like the recent Mears auction that went into the morning EST, and had the East Coast bidders restart the bidding on the lots.

From reading all of your past posts on this set, you are clearly an expert and I was hoping you would respond. I feel much better about my purchase knowing it is indeed a different card than the w575-1 version. Thanks again, Ronnie

Picked up this N284 Latham. Not normally a fan of this issue but I like this one since it kind of resembles the player it depicts.

Another very nice B&L auction. Nice work Scott and Leon.
