Default October Pickups

I got this from a fellow member.

I'm happy to pick this up from a fellow member. The canvas banner measures 47" x 29". Laraine Day was a movie actress who appeared in 40 movies from 1937 to 1960. Also included was the microphone she used to interview players and a signed copy of her book. What follows is from her obit:

Because of her 13-year marriage to Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher, Day was known as "the first lady of baseball." Day married Durocher in 1947, after divorcing her first husband, musician Ray Hendricks. Day and Durocher were divorced in 1960.

In 1950, Day started a 15-minute TV pregame show on WPIX-TV, interviewing players of Durocher's New York Giants at the Polo Grounds.

"She had her room under the stands, next to the dugout, with all the lights and the TVcameras, and she'd bring a ballplayer every day to interview them," recalled Herman Franks, a Giants coach under Durocher from 1949 to 1955.

"She was pretty knowledgeable," Franks said from his Salt Lake City home. "I never heard of a lady doing [ballplayer interviews] like that. Today, it's quite common . . . but in those days, it was unknown for ladies to be talking about sports."

Day often traveled with the team to spring training. In 1952, she spent some time on the road during the regular season - an experience that produced a memoir of her baseball life, Day With the Giants.

Franks remembered spring training in 1951, when the Giants had their camp in St. Petersburg, Fla. (swapping their usual Arizona location with the Yankees for a season), and Day and Durocher hosted nightly dinner parties at their beach house.

"We used to play charades," Franks said. "Leo would be one captain, her the other. We got into some pretty fierce battles with that."

Each season the Giants would play exhibition games on the West Coast, and Day would play hostess at her Hollywood home - bringing ballplayers together with such movie stars as Danny Kaye, George Raft and Irene Dunne.

"The ballplayers enjoyed meeting all these actors and actresses," Franks said.

I think many of us love the process of learning about our memorabilia. Because of this pickup, I'm now versed in the history of Laraine Day, WPIX-TV and her "salt shaker" Electro-Voice microphone. The Sports Illustrated is on its way, to complete the collection.

IF ANY OF YOU DETECTIVES COULD FIND A PERIOD PHOTO OF LARAINE WITH HER MICROPHONE OR BANNER, I WOULD BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL!

And finally, from another Net54 member , this art deco clock. The clock measures 9" tall x 8" wide.

I could use help on this in two areas: 1) Does anyone know anything about "(The) Willie Mays Show"? I don't think it was TV; could be radio or could be something that never came to fruition. 2) In the base of the clock is a "transformer" marked International Register Co. (now, Intermatic). There are no wires to the movement, so I'm wondering how this works . I haven't plugged in in yet.

edit: disregard question #2. This is a "Jefferson Golden Hour" clock. I found all kinds of info online.

I think my October budget is shot.

Default Say Hey

Those are both spectacular NY Giants adds, especially envious of the Day stuff as I have some of her and Durocher stuff this would go great with.

Great stuff Rob. I like that Sports Illustrated the most because it's dated Aprill 11th, which is my birthday. No, I was not born in 1955

Default 1989 Pirates

A neat pick up for me based on the patch. These were only worn by the Pirates and only on their home uniforms during part of the second half of the season. The 1989 Hall of Fame game was supposed to feature the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox. The Reds got delayed coming out Montreal, so the Sox hosted an inter-squad contest. I point this out as I have heard it said the patch was related to that game. It was not. The Pirates began wearing this patch during the 21-24 July home series against the Dodgers. This series sandwiched the 23 July Cooperstown Induction Ceremony (No Pirates were inducted, as only Yaz and Bench went in that year along with veteran committee selectees Red Schoendienst and Al Barlick). So this patch was not worn by the Pirates to honor organizational enshrinees.

The Pirates continued to wear this patch only at home through the rest of the season (confirmed through a survey of period newspaper photos). The patch features the same design that appeared on the cover of the 1989 Hall of Fame yearbook program and other items (bats, press pins, etc).

Default E 35 Hanna Batrite 36"

First time posting, thanks for the info Leon. Recently picked this bat up and would like to hear everyone's opinion. It doesn't say Ty Cobb at the barrel end
Like the one that recently sold. It's 36" long and weighed 31.65 ounces when I got it and now it's down to 29.55 ounces. Live in NorCal and wondering how I can keep it from loosing anymore weight. Any advice would be appreciated. It's hand turned, heavy use ,bat rack marks and very light remains of tape on the handle are left. I'll attempt to post multiple pics. Thanks

I added a pin and these five color slides to my 1971 Pirate collection. The quality is low as I scanned the slides rather than generating prints. The Clemente was shot during Game 2 of the 71 World Series in Baltimore. The Murtaugh image was used for the cover of The Sporting News and was shot by Emmons. Fellow member Joe (icollectDCsports) directed me to the pin. Thanks Joe! Based on the colors and the sellers San Francisco location I believe it is attributable to the 1971 NLCS.

So glad you won the pin, Mike! When I saw it, I immediately figured it to be from the '71 NLCS and thought of your collection.

Not in the same league as the great items you guys always post, but I picked up this cigarette case from Joe DiMaggio's Grotto from Andy Sandler's last auction. Neat little item, though not de facto baseball, other than it was Joe's place.

I am curious as to their size. Most of these I have seen are small around 5x7 at most. These smaller size photos were produced from the late 30s into the 40s and were sold by mail order. Most are unquestionably made from the original negative, but I have never seen one that could definitely be labeled to an exact time frame. I have also never seen any labeled as type 1. All the large size versions of these photos I have seen were modern reprints.

Thanks Mike! Mark they're 4 x 5 1/8 inches, and they look like they're from the original negatives. I know I've seen a couple of the images before. Especially the one fielding Gehrig.

That sounds about what I am familiar with. I am not sure who sold them, but it might have been the Yankees themselves. I have a couple myself. They came slabbed by Beckett as type 2s, but look no different than any of the other I have seen.

Thanks again Mark. After having them in hand and doing a little research, I found a few of these sold on RMY. Looks like sometimes they are classified as Type 1's and sometimes Type 2's. Rhys is far more of an expert than me!

The first 3 all look the same to me, but have different classifications. The colorations of all the photos look like yours. I would be very interested to hear his thoughts on the differences between those photos that led him to the different classifications.

I did do the black light Ben. Photos look good. Come to think of it, you're right. I've never seen a Beckett Slabbed Type 2 photo. I even recall laughing about a Cy Young cut out of an M101-1 slabbed as a Type 1 photo by them!

Default Pitcher trophy

Not old but has the look I like. This was presented to a runner up of the 2006 Nationwide Home Run Derby contest.

I am 100% sure that The Babe pronounced it that way from May 1935 until his death..

Pronounced Fewks.

There was a thread like that a while ago, though his name was not included.

Mike was referring to the much publicized hatred that Ruth had for the Braves owner. Who promised Ruth that he would be groomed as manager of the team. When the Babe realized that Fuchs only hired him to increase attendance he said he felt embarrased and treated like a side show. Ruth Homered on Judge Fuchs day his 709th. Two more in the next two months then 3 on his final game..

If that Gehrig is smaller (about 5x4) than it is probably one the Yankee team issues that was issued in the late 1940's. At one time I had the original envelope they were mailed in and it was from the early 1950's. If this is the wrong size than disregard what I said. We see the DiMaggio, Gehrig taking a swing in his warm-up jacket and the shot of Gehrig and Ruppert at the water cooler sometimes as well. We sell them as such (1940's re-strikes) but there is no definitive evidence that they were not issued over a period of time starting in the late 1930's and continuing through the 1940's and early 1950's. I have a stack of others as well and they are all late 1930's players, but the look and feel match up with images issued immediately after the end of WWII.

Ben,
To answer your question, I did not look at it under a black light, but am posting the photo with the label from the slab(now liberated from the slab).

Rhys,
I am interested in understanding your rationale for why 3 of the photos linked in Phil's post above, all listed in RMY, are stated as Vintage 1's and 2 are Vintage 2's, yet all are 4x5 if the size is a clear determining factor.
