Have you ever met a WOMAN that is GENUINELY interested in collecting sports cards? My answer is NO.

We have our current resident female voice of reason Joann. Also, while she is no longer active in the hobby, several years ago Julie Vogner was as active in this hobby as any man I've ever met. I along with most people only understood about half of what she had to say but she is missed around here!

So the answer is YES, there are definitely WOMEN that are GENUINELY interested in collecting sports cards. Also, Laverne collects memorabilia. Not sure about cards. Maybe Shirley collects the cards.

Though I did not meet her, I saw a woman rifling through boxes of cards(by herself) with several written list next to her, at the National. From so many shows I have gone to, I dont rember seeing this. She may have been looking for cards for someone else, but I dont remember seeing this before.

I suspect there are a few lone female card collectors out there.

Great point, I've never thought about it from that perspective! That could get ugly, especially if she is a "type" collector and you are a "set" collector. That would be a divorce hearing I would love to attend.

By the way, here is a name of a lady collector..........Clara Schmitt Rothmeier who played first base in the 1950's for a touring women's softball team from Springfield, Il and was otherwise known for her baseball themed quilts. She recently pass-away at 78 and at the time of her death had more then 10,000 cards. I have her R311 Pie Trayner which I recently won in an eBay auction. FYI: the final bid price on her two autograph quilts was $72,700.

Conclusion: The species exist, it just hasn't evolved to the same level as men .

As mentioned before Linda Fitak has a remarkable collection of post-war stuff and some interesting pre-war.

Joann's collection of women themed baseball cards is also impressive.

In Los Angeles, I know that there are a few others who I have seen at shows. One in particular, I think her name was Maria, has an amazing basketball card collection and outbid me on the only basketball card I now own at least twice (Mikan).

They are rare (or is it scarce?)...

I believe Penny Marshall (Laverne of Lavern and Shirley fame) collects basketball stuff.

As far as Penny Marshall goes, the chapter featuring her collection from that book about the great collectors published several years ago was quite interesting. She had an amazing collection of unusual baseball items that would each make for a good conversation piece. There was a DO NOT DISTURB tag from Ty Cobb's stay at a German hotel. Sure would not want to rile Ty up at 7 AM to ask him for an autograph, which was part of the intrigue brought out in this item.


Now during the 1980s, there was a woman who was an absolute fanatic about collecting New York Yankees material. Her name was Barbara Grossman, known as The Yankee Lady. She is featured in Alan Rosen's book, TRUE MINT. She was something else, and her taste was impeccable.

When Mr. Rosen bought Barbara's collection in the late 1980s he took out a full-page ad in SCD. At the top were black and white pictures of several of the cards--1969 Topps Super Mantle, 1960 Post Cereal Mantle, 1961 Topps Dice Game Bobby Richardson, 1962 JELL-O unfolded box with Mantle, 1941 Playball DiMag, Goudey Ruth, and a few others.

On Mr. Mint's website, he lists his top 20 finds. Barbara Grossman's collection was one of them. He comments that he wishes he had those cards back today. Rarely does he say that, but from the above cards and some others, he would have a fortune today. But, his modus operandi has always been flip, flip, flip. I wonder if Ms. Grossman regrets parting with that fabulous Yankee collection.

Back in the 70s, there was a husband-wife who both collected--Dr. Joe and Karen Michelwicz. They were from the East Coast. Excuse me if my spelling is off. Memory escapes me what Dr. Joe collected, but Karen was enraptured by the T-3s. She was working on completing that set.

Women collectors are scarce. It seems that when they do collect, their taste is remarkable.
