Can someone point me to the post that was made on this forum where a bunch of the auction houses came on and stated their stance on altering cards and disclosure?

Thanks guys!!

I went back and looked for it but couldn't find it. As I remember only 1-2 companies said anything. One was Mastro and they have since changed their stance on the issue...You can read their policy on their site or in their catalogs.
I do think it's interesting that few auction houses have signed up for the MEARS contractual policy, in order to use their services going forward...which, if I am not mistaking, has a due date of signing today. I guess MEARS' heavy handed approach (my opinion) didn't fare too well..If anyone wants to comment in this thread you can't be anonymous......regards

I think Mears is very fastidious when it comes to the grading and authenticating of game used equipment. But their foray into cards appears to be overreaching. I'll just send mine to SGC, that is sufficient.

I don't think grading cards is what they ever intended to do..I received an email, from someone at MEARS, with the statement:

"what remains a mystery to me is why folks think we are grading and authenticating cards...we are NOT and have no plans to..Our policy is very simple, if the auction houses changes or alters an item, which they can choose or not choose to do, they have to let folks know they have done it."

I agree with that part of the MEARS policy. I also think they are very much headed in the right direction. My thought is that the policy, in totality, was just too strict for most companies to sign up for. I think this kind of policy, and forward thinking, is what is currently helping clean up the hobby though. I feel better today about bidding in auctions than I did a year ago. I also believe, as bad as issues have been with cards, there are even more in the memorabilia and game used environments....I will say it again..I applaud what MEARS is trying to do. If their policy was reworded a little bit, which they wouldn't do, it would have gone over better...... ..Just my opinion.....best regards

That explains it more clearly, and I agree it originally sounded very heavy handed.

For an auction house that deals in a lot of game used equipment and uniforms, I think it is important for them to sign up.

I think one of the sticking points was the auditing of records....but there were other things too....

I don't believing auditing of records is going to happen...and besides, it's so easy to cook the books. They wouldn't find anything.

Here's the Mastro thread on this topic from one year ago (Nov. 2006), including multiple postings from Doug Allen on Mastro policies:

Thre may be more recent postings updating or clarifying Mastro's policies, but this is the thread I found using the search function.
